Visiting Chulalongkorn University campus, Bangkok, Thailand 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Chulalongkorn University is located near by the Grand Hyatt hotel. We marched along the golf course to reach the medical school, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, and turned to the main campus. When I was in Taiwan in the early 70's, I learned the University's name due to a scholarship was offered to a Taiwanese engineering student for a graduate study at this institution famous for science and engineering. At least my brother and a closed high school classmate did think about it. I knew at that time that was in memory of a King. Chulalongkorn is the number five of the Rama Dynasty while the current King is the number ten.
We walked to a near by light rail station and across a covered bridge to the other side of a big and busy boulevard. We were a little bit concerned when we entered the medical center where everyone was masked. A small group of military nursing cadets were passing by to attend classes in a lovely uniform, white shirt, blue gray skirt, and a small naval cap. They are young, dynamic, and beautiful and remind me a formal Consort of the King. She was from such military nurse cadet.
Right after the front gate, we can see the typical and classical Royal Thai architecture, several lotus ponds with flowers sit quietly among main building, library, and colleges. We visited the King's personal museum where I noticed President Clinton was there on a picture. Another US President, Obama, did take off his shoes to visit Wat Pho, the Reclining Buddha Temple. I was glad that each engineering department shown its name in English along with the Thai language. We temporarily exit the boundary of the campus to a small market full of small stores, eateries, fruits stands, and even groceries, etc. We checked on prices of items in compare with what we knew in Houston, Texas. I believe that is a provider for the University and local people.
We walked back to the Campus toward the big field in front of the King's museum. There is a soccer field in it and surrounded by beautiful gardens to form a fence like division. We walked patiently around and reached to the University Museum. We entered for a toilet use. I thought that we passed by a cafeteria for students. The students are in uniform and may not be mandatory. The co-ed wear white shirt with a school pin in different from the other school in the city. We walked back in opposite direction of the medical center to our hotel.
I always love to visit college campus whenever I have a chance. I adore good universities and good students that their future achievement make so much contribution to their own society, nations, and the rest of the world. Most of the famous university campus are well landscaped.
