Marching to London Camden Canal 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Marching to London Camden Canal 2019/Carlos Pueblo

There is a small section of the London canal network called the Little Venice for the canal traffic similar to the Italian famed city. This little Venice is where I end my description of the last piece right at the Camden Lock surrounded by an International Bazzar, a fashion store with antique Singer sawing machines, and plenty of canal barges shuttle business. I kept on marching toward the opposite direction of the Regent's Canal until I was tired or stopped by a tunnel some distance from the King's Cross exit.

Walking on the pedestrian path along with the canal is very enjoyable especially in London. On both sides of the canal, there are all new high rise building with at least three well design sitting area by the office buildings and new shopping malls, etc. The size or the width of the canal is larger than those I have visited outside of London and busier in traffic because that many people are visiting the city and many boats residents. One area with many barge homes, I see a large facility of boat garage to do all kinds of repairing service.

Near the King's Cross exit, I saw a boat book store presented on the Youtube and went inside to check on this unique book store. It is very convenient for a visitor like me to walk along the canal in London because that I can select anywhere to exit and get on to the city subway to anywhere to refresh myself. I watched two barges passing by a nice lock with a service station behind and a pretty rose garden elevated from the ground. Once they open the lock, the water level will be even and the barge can be pass. The captain needs to close the lock and return to the barge to power through the lock to a mooring basin and another one will take its turn. I am used to the maneuvering and it is still very interesting. The steering bar at the rear of the boat with a bird model. At the beginning, I was wondering how come the pigeon could stand so long on the bar. I need to find out why there is a bird sign in Kanji, Chinese character, on the steering word. There must be a relationship between them, Chinese character and the barge steering with the bird in it.

A group of youngsters were stocked in front of the tunnel for not be able to pass through. Another group of three on a motor boat try to figure out a way to help and I was watching. The row boat is owned by one of the youngster from his college graduation work, a very good looking one can be seated three person. I saw them at the Camden lock right out side of market and they rowed on the canal or carried the boat this far to the tunnel behind the King's X. The wife of the motor boat owner indicated that a little boat like that could not be passed the tunnel safely; therefore, they offered to help by tying the little one to the bigger one with 4 veneers attached to the little one to avoid bumping along the edge of the canal. In home owner policy in the insurance or the furniture business, we call something attached to another subject veneer like the brick veneer or rose wood veneer for a rose wood desk, etc. Now I know how to address such stuff usually seen hanging on a boat or even a huge cruise ship. It is a veneer.

Disembark and Embark at Seward, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Disembark and Embark at Seward, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Seward, Alaska is located at the center part of an upside down pan of Alaska if we consider the territory is a cooking pan with two pan handles, one is the coastal line we just pass and the other is the Aleutian Islands on the west toward Japan. The port is on the south of Anchorage, the largest city of the State, and also is the transition port of a back to back cruise from Vancouver, Canada. The name of the town is in memory of William H. Seward, the Secretary of State helping to purchase the territory from the Tsar of Russia. It is one of the most beautiful township in the U.S. with snow cap mountains around and one strait open to the Pacific. I have been here three times, one with a land tour via a land glacier visit and twice with cruises, the Sun and the Jewel.

A short distance walk to a small rail station with many passengers as they manage to take the train to Anchorage Airport while some of us to take a free shuttle to downtown. Summer workers from 48 States down below come to Alaska to work during the season, like driving a shuttle or as a shop keeper, etc. to serve for the tourist industry. I got off at a huge camping ground park on the beach. Again, we can see all kinds of licence plates from all over the States and Canada. Tourists haul their mobile homes with boats here for fishing and to avoid the summer heat way at home. I also see some with tents set up on the ground with a vehicle near by for local transportation purposes.

I watched people fishing this time. I was a little late after the pull back of tide that morning. I saw only the left over of salmon after the slice to fellet while there was one young lady was still trying to catch any left over fishes. A regular fishing rod with a unique hook attached with a big lead , to control the rod like river trout fishing without a bait on it. I assume the purpose is to hook the fish in a crowded fish school. I did see a guy finish fishing and walking along the beach to search entangle hooks and leads which were by products of fishing I guessed. For halibut fishing, you need a boat to the sea at least 8 feet deep to catch them. I believe that there is a limit for one to catch in a day for this delicious fish. Alaska tourism provides fishing tour for tourists to catch these famous fishes result guarantee including eating and shipping home afterward.

I walked back to the downtown area for the shuttle back to the ship. There are two Chinese restaurants on a street and only one is open for business and another one has been closed for a long time. I kind of doubt how a Chinese restaurant survived in such a small town. This time, I didn't wonder around the town too long that might be no longer curious. I was ready for the second back to another 7 days trip.

Re-visiting London Regent's Royal Park 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Re-visiting London Regent's Royal Park 2019/Carlos Pueblo

On the second day of my arrival in London, I took the Tube, London Subway, to the Regent's Royal Park. Actually, it is near by both the Hyde and Kensington on the northwest of London, part of the city of Westminster and London borough of Camden. I was checking on the rose blooming status and my attempt to march the Regent's Grand Canals including the Camden
Canal. I always visit the Park every time passing through London. Camden is a suburban township of the Old London where the new comers reside. Now, the old small township has been very prosperous. The canal network used to be the transportation to move foods supply from outside to the city. I have had many good memories from my previous visits including a search of old residence of Amy Winehouse, the young deceased singer, the international Bazzar by the Canal, Little Venice, and a search of Great British Library, etc. The front desk clerk of the librarian answered my Sun Yat-sen's old desk while he was in exile in the city should be located at the basement of the Great British Museum. We were told that how great he was while reading books in the library to develop his revolution idea for China.

The rose blooming was not ready by a week yet the turnips were fully blooming. I made my mind to change my last leg of this trip by canceling Reeds visit and returning back to London for another 5 days in order to see roses. I did run into the late summer roses at Queen Mary's Rose Garden in 2018 on our way to Edinburgh after several misses in 10 years. I followed the direction board by the Park Lake, a wildlife sanctuary, toward the Canals. I met a Filipino nanny with a cute little girl. I utilized all my Tagalog learning from the cruise to introduce myself and comment her beauty, etc. She tells me that I can always find her in the Park and as a matter of fact that I meet her again the following week.

After the Lake, there is a huge parkland before the exit of the Park to the Canal. I walked on the opposite direction of the Zoo toward the other end if any. One side of the Canal is the civilian area of business and residential area while on the side is luxury mansions. A well learned local gentleman chatted with me about it. Actually they are the embassy housing for the foreign ambassadors like the U.S. and China, etc. He pointed an unique backyard of Chinese mansion and also one of the neighbor. He told me that Donald Trump's first official visit of London was staying here with a huge security bill with anti missile set up, etc. I can't understand why the Queen invites him back for another visit. He said because Theresa May asked her to do it. Based on what I knows of the Queen, I don't think that she likes Trump's raciest style, etc. neither do many European leaders like Danish and Iceland's and myself in the U.S. voting blog.

The area after my long distance march becomes a regular city scenery of immigrants like our east side of Houston, Texas. There are more and more boat houses, most of them are old and permanent yet I still see some visiting barges passing through on either ways. I walked back toward the Zoo and Camden. I had my lunch at Feng Shang Princess Chinese Restaurant, a Cantonese one on a huge size of barge. I have been to this unique restaurant before and taken many photos. After lunch and toilet use, I kept on going north to the Lock, the Bazzar, and the fashion store with old Singer's Sawing machines.

Stay away from the summer heat way in Houston, Texas/Carlos Pueblo

stay away from the summer heat way in Houston, Texas/Carlos Pueblo

Justin of the cruise line agent reminded me to book my cruise tickets to avoid a regret of missing a back to back cruise to Quebec, Canada from New York City. I agree to him with an idea to my decision factors, to stay away from the summer heat way in Houston, Texas. Our summer in Houston has been very hot, above 100 degree of F or 38 degree of C plus lack of rain falls. I have had two weeks in Alaska in the early summer and like it very much to taste on the other side of the North Atlantic weather of 71 degree of F or about 22 degree of C, a spring climate in Texas.

Roger E., my tennis body, mentions to me that the booming of Houston population is due to the invention of air conditioning otherwise people can not imagine such a sleepy oil town would turn into the 4th largest city in the U.S. for such a short period of time. Especially after I am getting out of regular job, I hide myself inside the house all the time for the sorry rest of my old life.

Jackson, a tennis captain from my neighboring subdivision, and Lloyd, my old neighbor are all from the up state of New York. They both and many others came from the north after graduation from the engineering schools to Houston to work for the oil industry. Their parents gave them their old houses in the north; therefore, they went back to the north during the summer after their own retirement to avoid the summer heat and returned south during the winter to avoid the severe cold weather and snow up there.

i don't think that I can do this practice with second house idea. The real estate tax and the absentee owner are two reasons to be considered, plus both of children have no interests of moving around because that they are still working and young. I am glad that I find the interest of cruising around the world and I can follow the cruise liner of their business strategy to accomplish the weather, summer in the north and winter to the south, to avoid both severe temperature.

I read the itinerary of this back to back and I can see there are all very interesting ports of New England and the Canadian Provinces. Frugal person like me, I feel even better if I consider the cost of room and board, transportation, etc. It is very affordable in compare with the second house to own to reach such purpose to avoid the severe weather in Houston.

Sailing through the Hubbard Glacier, Yakutat Bay, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Sailing through the Hubbard Glacier, Yakutat Bay, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

The ship exit Glacier Bay via Gustavus, near the visitors center of the National Park to enter the Icy Strait and again following the inside passage coastal line north to the Hubbard Glacier. The Hubbard Glacier is located between Yakutat city and borough and Canadian Yukon about the same latitude with Skagway to the east, 200 miles northwest of Juneau, the State Capital, and is in the World Heritage Site. It is a tidewater/mountain glacier or valley glacier about 76 miles long. It is called an advanced glacier which means the glacier is still growing. The Yukutat Bay is similar to the Glacier Bay to the southeast full of icebergs floating on the bay even more. It has been named after the Chairman of the Bell Corporation the predecessor of current day AT&T. Again, there are many glaciers on the historical site.

It is a bonus of this seven days cruise to visit the Hubbard Glacier before the next day disembark at Seward, Alaska, it is a seven days trip from Seattle to Seattle, you're not going to visit this one or on the way back from Seward to Vancouver, the itinerary would be Hoonah of the small Eskimo village on icy Strait in lieu of this Glacier. The huge glacier is a little bit of difference from the Glacier Bay on the color and the appearance. It is more bluer and dirtier due to the dirt carried from up stream of the valley. It looks like the calcium carbonate formation inside of a cavern. The glacier constantly has been carved into icebergs and spread to the bay and we can see sea lions lying on the iceberg and floating down stream. Again, it is very comfortable to sit inside or stand outside to view the wonderful scenery of the world.

I travel alone myself on cruise and I don't mind repeating the same itinerary because I have so much fun and relaxing during the trip, i.e. the Alaska trip has been the fifth time in the past 10 years. I had had a dinner with Stephanie, one of my adopted daughter from the Dawn on that night at an Italian Restaurant. Every trip I would have two vouchers at four fees restaurants with a company; therefore, I ask the permission from their supervisors to permit of the dinner and it is the most enjoyable dinners that I have had.

Marching to three London Royal Parks 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Marching to three London Royal Parks 2019/Carlos Pueblo

My hostel is located outside of the Kensington Park at Bayswater, I have routine march to three Royal Parks every time I visit the city, the Kensington Park, Hyde Park, across business district of Westminster to the Regent's Park. What I enjoy the most of these two five weekday visits are the quiet environment of this huge city, the spring flowers, the wild life, and some others like run into morning drills of the Queen's horse guards, etc.

I walk into Kensington on or before 6 a.m when the gate is open toward west to the Kensington Palace. There is a square garden called the Kensington Green behind Queen Victoria's white marble statue. In front of the statue is the Round Lake with hundreds of white mute geese, Canadian geese, wild duck, and plenty of pigeons, etc. The colorful turnips were blooming at the time at the Green Garden while roses at four corners were not ready. There is another statue, a standing King William III on the south gate, both Victoria and him used to be  the resident of the Palace. Current day is occupied by Prince William, Princess Kate , and their three young children. William's parents, Prince Charles and Diana, used to live here before their divorce. After Diana's death, people built two memorial on the Park to remember her, a memorial playground for children on the north and a memorial fountain on the west of the Palace just by the Serpentine Lake.

I walked toward the Albert Square. Prince Albert is Victoria's husband and there is a huge golden sitting statue of him facing the Albert Hall, a famous place of performing arts in London. In this area, there are several Royal Colleges campus, museums, and foreign embassy offices, etc. extended to the city center like the Buckingham Palace, etc. On two raining days, I did visit the Victoria and Albert Museum to view their jewelry collection. I remember that this area of the Park has Japanese cherry blossom and some other area of the Hyde. I walk pass the south end of the Serpentine, a lake and one of the city water resource.
A small plate has been built to record Queen Caroline on her effort to dam the river to form a lake to serve as old time Londoners drinking water. She is the wife of King George II. The King lost in the American Revolution was his grandson, George III.

The Serpentine is a lake with plenty of wild birds, geese, ducks, and pigeons, etc. There are old people feeding birds along the lake and attracting a long line of geese and ducks,  even parakeets on their shoulders. Swimmers are swimming on the lake by the Lido's Cafe all year long without the concern of cold. On the west side, it is the Kensington Garden which I wonder if the name is the same as the Kensington Park.

Sailing through the Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Sailing through the Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

The ship left Skagway in the early evening sailing through the inside passage of Alaska all night toward the world famous Glacier Bay National Park. When I check the map of this area, I get a better picture of what inside passage, the location of Juneau, Skagway, Hoonah, etc for the World Heritage site includes the Tongass National Forest and Icy Straight. During the night, the ship was wondering around the Lynn Canal from Skagway and turned into the Icy Strait to approach Point Gustavus and picking up a team of rangers of the Glacier Bay National Park Visitor Center to present the Park on Board. We were official on sail at the Bay used to be a river in 1680, covered by the Glacier all the way passing through the Visitor Center to the Icy Strait in 1750, formed a huge bay inward in 1880 and today according to four pictures on the official map of the National Park. We were doing a comfortable sight seen of the great scenery inside the temperature control cruise ship.

We can sit inside or stand outside to view the scenery, i.e. the deck 12 rear open Cafe, the entire deck 13, and the pedestrian path of deck 7. The ship opens up window seats during the day till 4:30 pm for the preparation of dinner business. The newer ships like Joy and Bliss even add additional observation lounge on entire deck 13 with seats and couches, and bar, etc. The global worming during the summer, forms water falls along the way with snow cap still vivid on the top. This is what we call fjord, a cliff of mountain directly stick into the sea. There several fjords existed where the cruise liners love to present to their customers like Norwegian fjords, South American fjords and Alaskan fjords. My prejudice is that Alaska is the most charming one of all.

The Captain  made the ship slowly turning around to make the direct view of the huge Glacier available to every one at every position on board. The main one is 5,130 sq. miles about the size of Connecticut, 760 statute miles, 1,410 feet deepest point. There are 1,040 various glaciers formed individually after all the warming with 50 named. A certain level of the color appears to light blue due to the light reflection on the ice. Many iceberg are floating on the bay with  one or two sea lions lying on it. I did see bears running on the shores. I was well prepared for the trip because of my previous experience. I was warm from the top of my head, neck hands, and a pair of boots on the ground. I have two cameras and a pair of binocular on hands. I nedd to learn how to use the camera manually instead of auto setting in order to catch a better picture with snow white color background.

I tell my adopted daughters how lucky they are to work on this route to see the most beautiful scenery on earth. I don't think that I would be tired of repeated visits if I have my next opportunity. We're going to visit another huge one glacier, the Habbard Glacier and after disembark at Sewer, Alaska finally and I'll embark to repeat again for another 7 days trip with identical route.

Re-Visiting London, England 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Re-Visiting London, England 2019/Carlos Pueblo

After two days visit of Oxford, I went on to London, England for my next visit of English canals and rivers. London has been my favorite city to visit for years and I expect to see roses blooming, three Royal Parks, and the Regent's and Camden Canals. The train passes through the green fields of England with familiar scenery of ships roaming at the grass lands. I didn't see the power plants this time not like from Bristol to Oxford railroad track where the Mayor of Taipei, Taiwan liked to send his associates to visit for the power supplying model in Taiwan. I got off at the King's Cross Station of London. Kungga Zomkyi's Japanese restaurant is at the St.Pancras Station across the square. She is a pretty girl from Tibet. I got to know her two years ago when I passed by the station and on my way to London Gatwick Airport. She was appreciated of my visit and paid my bill. On the next day, I went back to the restaurant and stuff a 20 Pound bill at her hand and she returned it to me because she liked my special visit.

After releasing my luggage, I went on to visit the nearby Kensington Park and the Hyde Park. There are still so much to see even I have been to London for several times and mostly visiting these two parks. I took a quick tour of the Kensington Palace, the Albert Statue, and one side of the lake, and the Italian Garden, etc. The cherry blossom was out and the roses blooming was not at the season yet. The next morning, a gardener told me that the first bloom of roses should be within a week which was a disappointment news to me. I had missed the spring blossom ever since my first visit of London, I therefore made a change of my itinerary and skipped my five days visit of Reeds, England after the weekend visit of Cambridge. The only time when I saw the roses at Queen Mary's Rose Garden was in the late summer of 2017. It is a very attractive rose garden at the Reagent's Park.

London is the most visited city in the whole world and there are many reasons behind it. The city has been a representation of the world civilization for thousand of years. It has been the capital city of the old British Empire and the current center of the Commonwealth. City transportation network is super efficient. English is one of the most popular languages in the world and many people like to send their children to study in the United Kingdom. I am so impressed when I stand at the square between the King's X and St. Pancras Stations to see so many visitors are taking pictures of the beautiful architecture around.

Re-visiting Skagway, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Re-visiting Skagway, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

The ship left Juneau late in the afternoon sailing through the inside passage of Alaska again to Skagway, another lovely township left from the gold rush era. I always hike on the lower Dewey Lake for all my visits to this historical town. This time, I tried the upper Dewey Lake for my first attempt because an Indonesian internet manager showed me early this year a photo of a white wolf on his i-phone from Upper Lake and I was very impressed.

I disembark to the pier toward the rail road station where the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad is started toward Canadian Yukon Territory. At the Gold Rush time, the town reached to 10,000 population and was the large township of the entire Alaska Territory. Next to the station is the office of the Klondike Gold Rush Historical Park, is also related to the Gold Rush
and also has another station in the downtown for the kids visitors like a modern museum. Walking toward a highway by passing through a memorial park with a statue of someone famous, I turned into the entrance of the water resource and the lakes. I felt a little more difficulty to climb up to the smooth hiking route and I wondered if it was because of my age
or weight. I turned into the Upper Lake Route to enter the thick forest area and sometimes ran into climbing again with difficulty. Quit was always in my mind due to exhaustion.

Not many mountain hikers were there, as a matter of the fact, there were only three; however, the signs of direction were clear. We all desire to reach a waterfall and the Upper Lake for the views where is more hat an hour for jogger and I hiked more than two hours, stop and go, and still only made to the sign for the fall. Of course, I didn't see any wild animals and not even any birds significant.

On my way down to the mountain, I ran into a lady hiking with her two white dogs. I got their attention and I asked the permission to take their pictures in lieu of my while wolf dream. She doubts seriously that there is any wolf existing not even white color one in this area. I know the is very special and should bring in a good luck as he, the internet manager is told by the local aborigine which I guess is the Eskimo. I managed to get down to the mountain via the service road, more straight down to the hill and difficult yet faster.

I walked pass the small creek and enter the well kept downtown. Skagway is a typical town ship of the American West. Most of the stores are restaurant, jewelry stores, and gift shops. Many tourists are shopping and carrying shopping bags back to the ship. There are several places which I have missed this time, like he Lower Dewey Lake and the Pirate Point across a bridge of Skagway River. I always skip those paid trips like the locomotive ride, a tour to the Canadian border, or a helicopter ride, etc.

Re-Visiting the Thames River at Oxford, England 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Re-Visiting the Thames River at Oxford, England 2019/Carlos Pueblo

On the next day of my visit of the canal at Oxford, England, I went to the waterway, the river parallel to the canal through another direction. The entrance is on the other side of the train station with wider river yet with a canal lock facility and barges are waiting in line to pass. It has a touch tone control of the lock and digital cashier to take the fee. I saw a small office by
the path side yet there was nobody at hand and I watched barge captains helped each other to manage the system. It is a functioning network of the canals and rivers trust. There are more barges moored by the banks of both sides. At the beginning, we are still at the city vicinity and the river gradually moves away from the city yet still with parks, grass lands and some water sports facilities. I marched even farther than my previous two visits of the city and I attempted to reach my physical limit. I enjoyed watching the rowing crowds, a three days 100 miles marathon, passing 4 bridges hanging over the river, and turning back after a lovely village.

The spring was there of my visit with many different flowers decorated by the residents on their front and back yards. The first bridge after the entrance is a small independent township at Oxford that I know it is existed. The bridge is a busy street to a part of downtown while on the other direction is going to the suburban area. I must get up and down of the bridge in order to continue my walk by the river. The second bridge is not far away which is the Subway Sandwich Store located. I know a waitress from Eastern Timor. There is also a private high school with a nice rose garden on the campus which I remember well and also
inside another bridge is adjacent to a famous Oxford College. A small gift shop appeared on a famous movie is attracting many tourists. A row boats renter is on the river by a restaurant. I kept on marching and saw people engaging the rowing sport. Usually there is a person sitting on the rear to control the speed and direction while another coach is riding a bicycle on the path following the boat and provide the yelling to make a progress. The rowing length is lasting a couple of miles.

There are two paths for the pedestrian however one path is interrupted somewhere  and back on. On my side, there are green fields for seasonal geese and ducks, some cloth covered horses, etc. Everything looks so nice and peaceful. I ran into the finish line of a 100 miles three days marathon. Some one introduced me the activity and was quite interesting. I forget
the starting place which is about 30 minutes train ride down on the track to London. English and European appreciate the pass of the cold winter and open up their spring sport activities immediately. Many of the participants were accompanied by their friends or family members to enter the final station. I try to find the name of the marathon in vain, some advertisers yet no name, neither can I Google out the details.

I kept on going till a rowing club where I used its mobile toilet in order to march further. The station provides pier to land the boat to the river and some simple warehouse to keep the boats. There is a luxury sail vehicle by a side stream with a tall sail and a mansion is behind. I went on back to my path and pass that third bridge. More activities on the river and I ran into a beautiful set of lock with a small path to a beautiful village. I was curious and went inside to visit. I was very impressed of the date flower blooming. It is a residential area and I don't see a way out to a business area and I return back to the river.

I had a good length of conversation with a barge owner. He lives on boat and rents a mail box at town. This is what he says that you don't pay tax for the boat house. It is quite safe for his property, of course, the public safety is quite well in the U.K. also the neighbors keep their eyes on the intruders and help each other.

Going to visit Bangkok, Thailand in 2020/Carlos Pueblo

Going to visit Bangkok, Thailand in 2020/Carlos Pueblo

Yesterday afternoon, I received an e-mail from Singapore Airline for a promotional fare in 2020. After a phone call advice from Yong Teoh in Staten Island, NYC, I booked a round trip flight for 19 days between late January and February.

The promotional fares for flights are restrict and limit; therefore, it is  good for me for a reasonable budget with plenty of time to manage it. Amy is joining me for the trip and it is the visit to this lovely country for the first time. We don't know if we can extend our trip to some other cities for this period of time.

I'll inform Dr. Laow of the head monk of a Thai Buddhist Temple at Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire to see if he can give me some advise. I'll also contact two of my daughters in this area, Roma of Indonesia and Peiven of Malaysia and we may visit them.

Re-visiting Juneau, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Re-visiting Juneau, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

The cruise ship left Ketchikan late early evening and sailed the entire night toward the north to Juneau, the State Capital of Alaska. It is all on inland sea and very smooth sailing. Juneau is a city with huge city limit, the second largest in the entire U.S. next to Jacksonville, Florida even our Houston city territory is smaller than Juneau. Including the next back from Seward, Alaska southward, it has been my 5 times visits to this lovely city. I visited Liv of the House of Russia, took a bus to the Mendenhall Valley, marched to the Mendenhall Lake, viewing the
Mendenhall Glacier, the Nugget Fall, and the Tongass National Forest Visitors center.

Liv is the owner of this lovely gift shop on the main street of Juneau, the House of Russia. Every time when I take the Alaska cruises, I always report to her of my arrival at her shop. I believe that she is either a Norwegian or Swedish yet not a Russian. Her shop is very unique and very successful even the purchase agent on board put it on the instruction lists of shop.
What I do is say hallo and chat some if she is not that busy or I'll say good bye and see you again. I walked briefly in the downtown and ran into Lisa Zhang, my Chinese adopted daughter who wanted to go to a market and I informed her my way to Mendenhall Glacier.

The bus station is near by a Sheraton 4 Points Hotel and I am familiar with how the bus to work. I took the city bus to circle a part of Juneau city for more than 12 direct line miles to the Mendenhall Valley stop and marched about 40 minutes to the Visitors Center of the Tongass National Forest where the Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall Glacier are located. The breeze blowing from the 13.6 miles wide Gracier through the iceberg Lake has been cooling down the the hard march on the road. I ran into Michael of Colorado who recaptured their lost luggage at the Juneau Airport that day. They hired a jeep to tour the city and took some photos of a black bear in his i-phone. I walked to the Nugget Water Fall about 3 miles a round trip. The Glacier is the in-melted snow becoming an ice formation covered the entire mountains. Some of the ice melted during the year and the icy water falls from top of the glacier down to ground to form a clean beautiful lake and the water path is the water fall.
The Nugget Fall is  huge and beautiful.

I didn't stop by the midway lake front viewpoint, instead I took many photos on my way back of the spring wild flowers, dandelion, our Texas Bluebonnet in larger size, and some Forget me not Alaska State flower, etc. The visitors' center while the National Forest is very large. At night, I had a late dinner with one of my adopted daughter, Jenny who was the one officer assigned to help to recapture his luggage from the negligent airline. She went out to have some Filipino Bar-B-Q at the downtown harbor square; therefore, I ate her hare of the steak. The waitress, Mica, another daughter delivered the left over cheese cakes to my room for my breakfast next morning.

Re-Visiting Oxford, England 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Re-Visiting Oxford, England 2019/Carlos Pueblo

There are canals and rivers network at Oxford, England that a train conductor, a canal
expert, recommends me to visit. I have been to the upstream of River Thames several
times and I find that I can visit the canal on an opposite direction during my weekend
stay at this lovely college town.

After putting down my luggage, I walked across a bridge above the upstream of the
Thames toward the downtown, all Oxford Colleges located. I found that the old square
of the bus station became a barzar again with many eatery stands crowded with visitors.
I didn't find the Turks rolls like my first visit to this city, instead I picked a dumpling place
my lunch and I was not impressed.

Returning to the bridge and began to walk down to the canal, I found a metal plat on the
ground to commemorate the 200 years built of the canal, 1790-1990. It is almost 230 years
of usage for this waterway and still quite vivid in compare to all my canals visits before.
The width of this canal is wider with a river parallel briefly next to it. On the pedestrian
path, there are many barges, house boats, moored by the bank, aged boats mostly. Based
on the appearance of the barge installation, I believe that they are residents of the city.
By the path, there are city water connection, power source, and even shower facility, etc.
Across the canal on the other side, it is a regular residential brick houses with the traditional
English style and the backyard facing the water with some pretty garden. Some residents even
have pies built to have a way to use the canal.

I see at least a larger pier with larger barge on the other side of the pedestrian path for canal
touring use. After the residential area, it is become a large tennis park of many many grass
tennis courts full of uniform girls taking lessons or some kinds of weekend activities. On the
walking path, the parallel creek ended and followed by some regular farm houses with horses on the backyards. There is a birds sanctuary park on the same side. I kept on marching
as far as I could. I saw a bridge and exit to a small playground of a nice apartment complex
and I thought of using a toilet and have a small eatery like in Birmingham canals. I was lost at
the apartment side street and couldn't locate the street across the bridge or any sign of a
business set up at all.

Until I felt enough and I returned back to the city. There were more pedestrians on both
directions and I believed that was a main pass for some residents nearby. I inspected the barge more and again. I even watched a barge full of youngsters passing through to reach
the city even though they looked green of their operation yet there was someone in their
group who could come to rescue at the mess up situation.

Some of the barge residents look like permanent, they even cultivate small gardens by the
path or built grill stand for regular use. They lock their bikes either on the boat or by the path
with permanent fixture.

At the end of my 15 day Panama Transit Cruise 2019/Carlos Pueblo

At the end of my 15 day Panama Transit Cruise 2019/Carlos Pueblo

The ship left Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at night and sailed north on the north
Pacific coastal line toward Los Angeles, California, it was at the end of my 15
day Panama Transit Cruise in 2019. I have had so many good memories from
the trip, met so many beautiful adopted daughters, visited so many nice ports
, seen so many mango trees with green fruits hanging on branches, met so many
Interesting nice people, and taken lessons of Japanese Go and the bridge game.

The ship Bliss is much newer than most of my previous experience with the cruise
liner and larger. I was very happy to see Aiza from the ship Jade and her roommate
Gerli whom both I invited to two nice restaurants for dinners. These are the perks
which are given to me as the reward of my latitude status. It is one of my favorite
activities during my cruise trip. I also get to know many new adopted daughters on
the ship that I treasure very much as they are such wonderful youngsters, polite and
hard working with excellent manners.

During days at sea, the cruise provided some classes to fill the day, such as bridge
Lessons, Japanese Go, and several language classes, etc. This is the first formal lessons
which I have had with the bridge game. The instructor is the fellow passenger, Patrick
Kallaus, the head of bridge club at Hawaii Island. He delivers notes to introduce how to
open the game and count cards. Ted Terpstra is the President of San Diego Go Club,
a very nice gentleman, offers his help to promote Go in California. I also attended the
language classes including Tagalog, Spanish, French, and African, etc. The staff on board
pitch in for the tutorship. I can open and respond several rounds of bridge opening and
roughly count the points all hands and some cards of my partner on hand. It is more
difficult for me to keep Go as my hobby at home. I can still practice some foreign language
in Houston by attending the local community center classes or speak to my neighbors.

I ran into a young lady staff with the cruise director’s office. She is from Mukden, Manchuria.
We have had several interesting conversation about Manchu Dynasty which her ancestors
belongs to. She gave me some good tip about Manchu race in history. I have had an adopted
mother also from Mukden also with a surname Pei like hers. She told me how that surname
comes from. It is also involved the Chinese slavery history. She is very surprised that I am so
fond of the classical novel, the Dream of the Red Chamber, about the royalty of Manchu
Dynasty. There were slavery system in the Chinese History, yet it seemed to be better off
than some of the rest of the world where I travelled.

Continue to march on the city canals in Birmingham, England/Carlos Pueblo

Continue to march on the city canals in Birmingham, England/Carlos Pueblo

There were four days to stay in Birmingham; therefore, I continued to visit
the 2000 miles U.K. canals and rivers network. My understanding is that the
system has been built during the era of the Great Industrial Revolution. The
canals were needed to transferred the raw material from Liverpool and
Manchester ports, etc. to the inland factories and vice versa, the finished
products to be shipped out worldwide via these tiny manmade waterway.
The internet sources is believed that the pottery manufactories of
Staffordshire initiated the first canal. I believe that all the canals were built
by the private venture of needs. I ran into a Chinese youngster who walked
on the canal bank to his work in the morning and I asked him about the famous
Chinese Great Canal between the north and the south about 1500 years ago.
He tells me that the Canal is still functioning yet not for foods transportation but
for the construction material and the width of that canal is larger than the canals
in U.K.

I am very fond of my newly finding interest of the canal in England, as a matter of fact,
it is my sole purpose of this monthly visit. I like the well maintain system and converted
to a local park after their loss of transportation usage. Mute Geese, ducks, and some
other wild birds are the permanent fixture of the system. The canal is used by leisure
barge operators to travel around and few interested like me to make a special trip and
taste of this man made wonder. There are three more ventures that I like to mention
during my stay in Birmingham. In order to solve my toilet issue during my march at the
canal, I had to exit to the street in order to continue my 15 miles or more daily walk.
Two of my exit, I ran into two German car dealerships, one Mercedes-Benz and another
one BMW. Both have the excellent facilities. The third and fourth exit were at the same
hamburger restaurant on a roadside. At the beginning, the lady manager just pointed the
door to the backyard and I didn’t have to purchase anything. On the way back, I was thirsty
and needed to go to the toilet and I came to the same exit and the same restaurant.

I ordered a can of soda and went to the backyard. I followed a young man to order that
day’s special, a double layers cheese burger, French fries and another drink in the same
order. I believe that is one of the best burger for a long time for me. After Birmingham,
I continued to march on U.K. canals and I exited for toilet and sometimes for food and I
didn’t run into that kind of small restaurant again, just a two ladies operated business.

Re-Visiting Ketchikan, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Re-Visiting Ketchikan, Alaska 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Ketchikan, Alaska is the first port out of Canadian Coastal Inland Sea
back to the U.S. territory. It has been established way before the
Alaska Gold Rush era back to the Russian fur trade after Tsar Peter the
Great. I always hike through the bank of the Ketchikan Creek to the
park by the hatchery. On my first back to back disembark, I saw a pretty
pink blooming scene on a hill and I decided to take some photos for my
cherry blossom photo collection. It is rhododendron. After that residential
visit, I marched back to the creek and complete my routine.

The residential area is built on a hill and must climb up on wooden stages
and street. I didn’t locate the big pink blooming tree; however, there were
many smaller others with different colors, red, yellow, light blue, and purple,
etc. After a long freezing winter, spring flowers are even more vivid and
beautiful. I also noticed the petunia pots hanging on under the roof or on
the balcony, and many wild flowers, such as dandelions, forget me not the
State flower, and bluebonnet bigger in side that our Texas one, our State
flower. I have been attracted by the rhododendron in many place worldwide
such as Seattle, Victoria, BC, the Great Chateau de Fontainebleau, France, etc.
I has been a treat to visit Ketchikan in the spring to view such wonderful
Scenery, two parks in particular, a small one out of the channel before the creek
and another one larger by the hatchery.

At the end of the creek hike, there is a hatchery and a Totem Museum closed to
each other. I haven’t been inside to either place, yet I do stay at the beautiful
park all the time. The park is surrounded by rhododendron trees and the golden
bell trees with small brook from the peak nearby with tall trees inside the park.
I am interested in the life of the salmon and trout, their coming home from the
Ocean. The hatchery releases their products back to the creek down to the sea
regularly and I think that is similar to the one trout hatchery in California.

Ketchikan is also claimed as the Salmon Capital of the world other than a small
Gold rush town in Alaska. I tried a small piece of preserved can fish and was tastier
than the one fillet at home. The old creek side stores begin with many small gift
shops and small restaurants and usually I finish a quick tour of the area and walk
out of the wood board path up stream toward the hatchery. On my way back to
the cruise ship, I would walk through the new downtown area.
