Visiting the campus of Hong Kong University 2020/Carlos Pueblo Hong Kong University has been established since 1911 is one of the famous and prestige universities in Asia. I am so glad to have a day of visit the campus out of my three nights stay in the city. The University has also been back track to the Hong Kong School of Medicine for Chinese which one time Sun Yat-sen attended. It was established in 1887 while Hong Kong was ceded to the British Empire due to the loss of the Opium War in 1840. Eugenia told me due to that fact, HKU took Sun as an alumus. There is a small garden and a statue of Sun in the campus. We took a light rail green line from Won Chu Hang to Admiralty station to change to the blue line to the University. As a matter of fact, we did pass the campus wall on our way to the Stanley Bay a day before. We walked across a covered pedestrain bridge to the entrance. It was a school opening day yet cancelled due to the out break of the Wuhan Cornonavirus. We can see several buildings under the benefaction of the Shaw's Brothers, Run Run and Runmei Shaw Brothers Ltd., the films producer famous for the Kung Fu and some other kinds of movies in Hong Kong and Singapore. There is also another Hong Kong Chinese University, the second public insititution in Hong Kong and also famous. I was wondering around the buildings and found the student center on the first floor in a significant location. I read all the postal left from the out break of the pro-democracy movement or the Anti-Extradition Amentment Bill Movement which created a huge attention of the world. The postal clearly are advocated their desire of the Hong Kong Independent which is a taboo according to the authoritarian regime in Beijing, China. I fully understand the situation in Hong Kong that people feel no way out like the people in China now under the rule of Chinese Communists. We went back to the small noodle restaurant at the Causeway Bay for lunch. It was the afternoon to pack our luggage for our cruise on the next day to Vietnamese Coast.

Sailing back to Sydney, Australia 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Sailing back to Sydney, Australia 2019/Carlos Pueblo

After Auckland, New Zealand, the cruise ship was turn back to the original route back to Sydney, Australia, I called it the second back of my back to back trip. Some of passengers like me as the back to back, most of them were new passengers embark from Auckland, and some of crew members from their vacation. I expected Jingle, my beloved daughter who informed me of her schedule yet everyone on the ship told me that Mary Ann missed the airplane due to the visa issue, and I saw Aileen, the Maitre D'hotel, who lead the group back from Manila.

Aileen was transferred from the Tsar's Palace in charge at night to the Azura, the second restaurant in charge. We were very happy to see each other again. I asked her to come to meet my fellow Taiwanese passengers and introduce her to them. These were a group from Kaoshiung, Taiwan. She told them that she had been to Kaoshiung on this ship and loved the street eatery very much. She copied down their room numbers and sent them each chocolate candies. One day one of the ladies on the deck 14 observation station thanked me for her candies which made them feel so important. I could only admit that was her talent of the public relationship and good at doing business. She is a very beautiful lady with leadership. I have had many daughters on the ships all over the world and they all know each other.

Jingle is one of a few daughters still keep correspondence with me. She was transferred from Dawn to Jewel with a group of crew members as their restaurant manager, Nigiel as the leader. He is my son-in-law and very friendly to me. His wife Jenny works inside the atrium office as the group service manager is one of my most favorite daughters. Jingle was assigned to Azura and helped to select my menu. I have been following her approaching 10 cruises from Dawn to Jewel, a very special daughter. She is a senior waitress.

Mary Ann is another pretty waitress and has been with Dawn. Due to her visa delay, she was aboard in Wellington three days later. She was therefore assigned a waitress in floating assignment at Azura. There are many restaurants on the ship and all restaurant staff must come to help the Garden Cafe cafeteria during the day and go back to their designated home restaurant in the evening. The restaurant manager will move some waiter or waitress to rescue the busier restaurants from time to time. They are all very busy and I have to find the opportunity to chat with them.

Another important matter during my cruise trip is to invite daughters to dine with me at two fee restaurants like the steak house, French restaurant, and Italian restaurant. First I must have my invitation accepted, then an approval from the restaurant manager. It is because that I have had a privilege to have two vouchers to dine at four restaurants with a companion. You can imagine how happy I have been to dine with some most beautiful young ladies. It is certainly the best of my life.

Second day in Hong Kong/Carlos Pueblo

Second day in Hong Kong/Carlos Pueblo

Eugenia came to the hotel to pick up for a tour on our second day in Hong Kong. I knew her in Frankfurt, Germany while both of us were on our tours in Europe. She said that we were at the Aberdeen area; therefore, she had a plan to take us to visit Stanley, had a lunch at the Causeway Bay area, drinking coffee for the entire afternoon with a life music performance, and finally at a famous roast goose restaurant for our dinner.

We took a train to the Central and transferred to a bus passing through a tunnel and at the high rises of the city and the high wall like campus of the Hong Kong University, her alma mater. As a matter of fact, the alumni Association has listed Dr. Sun Yat-sen as one of them due to his attending of the old Hong Kong College of Medicine, the forerunner of the University. I showed my interest to visit the campus of this famous University. Stanley is a small bay and the British Authority built a pier for their vessels named a Governor-General Blake as its name, I read the words on a stone monument. The old Governor-General building was moved to the front of the pier nicely. Also nearby is the popular Sea Goddess Temple and the famous Guanying Bodhisattva statue is on the hill which is very famous for the scenery on movies in Hong Kong. She did mention that there were a big resistance in Hong Kong during Japanese invasion during the War and Stanley was the last beach head. I tried to show my well informed character, I asked if it was the Gurkha army. She knocked her head and took us to visit the Military Cemetery on another hill where we could see the overall scenery of Hong Kong, the bay, the high rises, and the mountains, etc. We continued to pass the old residential area of small plan houses with small yards for growing vegetable and flowers. We came to the original post office building, still in function, to catch on a bus to a noodle house at Causeway Bay section of downtown, of course everywhere in the city is like a downtown. It is a small Teochew eatery yet crowded with customers. I ordered two bowls, one fish rice noodle and one plan seaweed soup and both ladies ordered beef meet balls noodle for lunch. There were delicious. Amy and I went back again on the third day in the city.

We took a bus again to a coffee and bar restaurant across the Island. I forgot the name yet she told me that was closed to the original place to raise geese for the restaurant to have them roasted. We had listened two sections of performance of Jazz music. Finally, I requested three popular hits and they agreed to play one of them, What's up? It was excellent.

She took us to another roast goose restaurant to wait on long line to get in and I regret very much that I was not alert enough to notice that she was allergy to both the goose and the duck due to her shoulder's pain according to Chinese herb medicine advice to avoid eating them.

Visiting Auckland, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Visiting Auckland, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Auckland is the largest city population in New Zealand located on the northeast of the North Island of New Zealand. It was the final port of my first cruise. It was a sun shining day very different from the capital city of Wellington on three days ago. I had my mind made to tour the main street of all the high rise buildings. The area closed to the pier was under construction and I had mad a detour to pass the company's building of my daughter's work. It is an international city with many kinds of young people including Asian. Even though it is very different from most of the ports we have been passing through, Auckland reminds me of the metropolitan of London, the new area of London. I ran into a graduation ceremony of the Auckland University of Science and Technology, the newly graduate were marching on the main street toward a city square with two convention centers. I had chatted with two three person groups to join their celebration.

The first group were a British professor advising two pretty sisters in a medical science field.
He was either from New Castle or Leeds Universities and went to the University of Texas San Antonio Medical School for a visiting professorship some time ago. The elder sister was his student in the same field before and wore a red robe and cap to join her younger sister on the side to take pictures and throwing caps toward each other. This reminds me of my miserable graduation during my school life. I was not that joyful when I was at the undergraduate ceremony and was away from the campus when I had my master of science done. Of course I must admit that I never finish my Ph.D work due to age, lack of proficiency, and the doom future of chemistry during that time. Yet I do enjoy to attend both of my children's college graduation ceremony and both of them are still working.

The second group were a teenager looking graduate with his parents. He is in computer science major and I admire his bright future for employment in such a big city. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kong joined us for pictures. Senior Kong mentioned to me that his ancestor was the famous Confucius of Santong, China some 2,500 years ago. His recent ancestors moved to nearby Korea and he moved again to New Zealand. He gave me his name card for the future correspondence. He is the public relation director of the Korean Society of Auckland Inc. I promised him mail back the photos for them to keep.

I walked in to an office of the Amnesty International and paid a quick visit. I have always admired their work toward the human right for all unfortunate people in the world. Before 1989 in Taiwan, Taiwan was under Chinese Nationalist's rule similar to the current day of China including Hong Kong under Chinese Communist's rule. Human right violation were and are very common. Chinese do not recognize the human right issue and the rulers advocate the nationalism to surpass human right. What the AI organization can do is to inform both China of their violation and we are appreciated. Now, Taiwan is ruled by Taiwanese and respect the human right has no political prisoners.

Flying from Bangkok DMK to Hong Kong 2020/Carlos Pueblo

Flying from Bangkok DMK to Hong Kong 2020/Carlos Pueblo

DMK is Don Mueang International Airport for short, the old airpot of Bangkok used for the discount airliners for the area in difference from BKK for most of the regular international transportation. It is the reason why we have to spent a briefly night at an inn nearby the airport. There was a nice breakfast offered free at 4:00 am and a small fee shuttle to take needed passengers to the airport thereafter. It was too late for us to avoid or pre-pay the luggage fee on the internet. The budget flight doesn't cover any of the luggage for any flight domestic or international. It was very simple and quickly flight and arriving Hong Kong.

A young lady with a mask covering her mouth in the information center kindly helped me for all my questions involving this tree nights stay. First, showed me how to get to our hotel by the public transportation, second, how to get my favorite Teochew marinated duck by focusing on two restaurant at the Central Station area, third, extra help to set up my i-phone to have a phone by using Line and Facebook yet I didn't use both in my simple i-phone life. She is the first nice impression of this great city. I can communicate with the local in the Mandarin Chinese; therefore, we have had a very smooth transaction of light rail and bus to reach our hotel. All area passing by were very familiar in my memory from reading books and watching movies and finally I made it to this great city.

Another nice young clerk in the hotel counter kindly review my interest again and double check my request which made me very appreciated. She had pointed out one of the two places, the Central and the Causeway, for eating my duck. Both bus and light rail station are nearby the hotel. Another nice girl also with a mask helped me to purchase the train ticket, by selection a pass for me and a solo ticket for Amy due to the senior discount matter. We reached the Central quickly and were wondering around the busy street to locate my restaurant. It was still on the holidays of the Chinese Lunar New Year and I was told most of restaurants were still closed for business. Finally a nice young gentleman stopped with his family to help for matter of my eatery. He flipped his i-phone and found both of my written recommendation of duck restaurants which were about another 30 minutes walk on the Victoria Avenue. He suggested to go to a next street parallel to Victoria to try our luck. We did find a roasted goose restaurant on a second floor of a crowded street. I was told marinated goose was also delicious and famous in Teochew cuisine menu. We had a very delicious dinner and the lady manager even made an effort to introduce the business because that she was not that busy during the protest of youngsters.

Eugenia, an acquaintance from my previous tour of Frankfurt, Germany, responded to my e-mail of my visit. I called her and she promised to meet us in the hotel on the next morning for some visit of Hong Kong.

Scares me a lot by misplacing my wallet/Carlos Pueblo

Scares me a lot by misplacing my wallet/Carlos Pueblo

Yesterday morning I was preparing to take my son to his doctor's office for a visit and couldn't find my wallet and the panic started. I had repeated checking every possible places in the house several times, bed room, desks, up stair library room, garage tennis bag, old vehicle, and even drove to the gas station where I had gasoline filled in both car and a small gas tank for lawn mowing, etc. On the previous night, I did go to a gas station and pulled out my wallet to have two credit cards purchase before coming home that was about 9 pm. I did empty my pockets inside the house, i-phone, shoe knife we called to make my feet fit to a pair of tight tennis shoes, etc. All were in place in spite of the wallet. I woke up every one including the pet cat Ayoko who knew something strange was urgent and happening.

Before I left the house, I called Chase to report my loss. The clerk told me that I was not fraudulent for any pending charge and cancelled all three cards and issued me new ones. I was driving very carefully on the congested freeway and still worrying my lost wallet. Even though I was sure it would be long gone if I lost it on my way out of the gas station, some one picked it and would keep it yet I still went to check with the convenient food store of that gas station. The night clerk in charge laughed that was impossible to find and I knew that was true. I can't wait the nice character of that person to keep my cash in the wallet and mail back the rest including the old leather wallet. The anxiety of people to sell the contents inside the wallet, credit cards with driver license to make some automatic check out purchase bothering me a lot.

My son tells me that I can't go out to cruise again until his surgery is done which makes me feel better because that I can forget the wish to travel from Argentina to Chile and to the Caribbean then  again  to NYC and London with grand total 53 days and lots of money spending. By saving that cost, I can make up some $350 cash inside the wallet. Suddenly, I felt like to practice my long lost Spanish study and I began to converse with the nurse at the doctor's office and the pharmacy clerk at my clinic on my way back from the doctor's visit. I felt a little bit hope of my depressed life.

I continued to call Capital One Bank to cancel my credit cards, there were two and the bank would issue new ones for me immediately and reminded me to use the new cars. I couldn't get to my 360 debt card which I used it in Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Singapore many times. I switched to prepare to cancel my driver's license which was very urgent as well that the early voting was started and required an personal identification document and I couldn't carry my passport to the voting station to get a vote that looked silly. I went to check a drawer of the last year receipts for income tax filing. I was fighting on every front for the time being, wallet issue, Arthur's surgery schedule, my blog writing, and 2019 federal income tax filing etc. I was suddenly very busy on my self exile or self quarantine life.

Here it was, the old black leather wallet was laid properly on top of an organized pile of receipts. I was organizing the receipts in order to figure out one of my 1099-miscellaneous income. Amy figured it out that I was placing the two unusual gas receipts to a wrong 2019 drawl due to aging and that was true in fact existed in my mind. The old wallet was in my one hand and I placed it on top of that small pile and closed it.

I was so happy and released; therefore, I decided to send my bit up tennis rackets to re-string. The tennis pro was on his way passing by my house and picked them up. I have known him ever since Michelle's day in Texas junior tennis tour which has been very good 25 years. He is still a very good tennis professional executing his job faithfully.

Visiting Tauranga on the North of the North Island of New Zealand 2020/Carlos Pueblo

Visiting Tauranga on the North of the North Island of New Zealand 2020/Carlos Pueblo

The ship reached Tauranga on the next day morning after leaving Napier overnight. The map is shown like an arm making a fist, both sides of the arm shape island are beautiful beaches with white sand and the fist part is a small hill 232 meters to the summit. I easily decided to hike from the port along with one side  of the beach toward the fist part of the mountain. It was early in the morning yet still some gathering of beach goers. A series of huge trees like the American Pines caught my eyes. Two locals with a Christian mission on the side of the walking path answered my question that trees were planted at the time of town building; therefore, 50 years of age at most. They are huge that almost required three grown up arms to arms to cover the trunk. I had had a bible discussion with these two Jehovah Witness like missionary wherever in the corner of the world. They are devoted Christians. What I mentioned was a story of a day Jesus was thirsty and asked a woman for a buck of well water and the living water thereafter.

On the side of the entrance, there is a camping ground for the recreational vehicles which are more like the scenery of the North American camping ground. Those RV are larger than the compact size of utility vehicles on the beach of Napier. I got myself ready and followed a group local seniors hiking on a service road around and up to the summit of Mount Maunganui, or Mauao. My experience is that the service road is flater the mountain steps yet takes more time to cover the route. It is designed to let the 4 wheel drive vehicle to go up and down to do the maintenance. The mountain is full of red flowers trees called bottle brush. It is much larger than our Texas dwarf species in the front yard garden. The flower shape is unique with red tread like petal like a bottle brush. I could have a very good view on every corner of the roadside to see the near islands across the bay.

Fellow tourists on the way down were keeping on encouraging us that there was only five minutes left to the top yet actually took more time. I had to take several brakes and encouraged myself that I should be able to make it. I saw one middle age man fell twice on the way down due to slippery path with a difficulty to get up. This was why I decided to change route by the ladder steps down, easier and faster yet required a pair of good knees. On the summit, there had been many people gathering already to see around. We could see around 360 degree over the area. On my second trip up to the same summit, my hiking partner ,Professor Susan of Laredo, Texas, pointed to a far away island strip with a smoke cloud behind that was the White Island where a life volcano erupted with  17 casualty. The cruise ship was on the pier in front of us some days before. Someone on a dinner table broke out the tragedy news. That smoke is still raising slowly and I don't believe any more excursion would dare to follow. It reminds me one day of our visit to the Sakura Volcano far away from a park at Kagoshima, Japan on the south of Kyushu Island.

On my way down, I ran into Lily and her daughter again by an observation post, she was very surprised for my effort to make the hiking. They live in Sydney, Australia. They did come to visit their other sibling in Houston attending Rice University later after I finish my second back of the cruise. The other side of the arm shape beach was busy when I passed by. There is a residential section which I passed by in order to be back to the ship. It is like the new subdivision in Houston, very nice and elegant.

Flying to Bangkok from Houston 2020/Carlos Pueblo

Flying to Bangkok from Houston 2020/Carlos Pueblo

Last year the Singapore Air offered a promotional rate to fly from Houston to Bangkok, a log flight covering a lot of territory yet was very interesting. With Amy's interest, we booked a 19 days ticket and made a plan to visit Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, a seven day cruise to the Vietnamese coast. As the trip came near, a day before the Chinese Lunar New Year, we were under a threat of Chinese Wuhan Coronavirus and the cruise liner informed us to be sure not sick or forfeit the trip. We di make it and had had such a wonderful time in the Southeast Asia.

Even though it's a long haul, I have no complaint for my natural frugal character. It's a good deal with a super service from the airliner. There are six meals provided with drink including liquor. The head stewards even put efforts to have vegetarian meals for me even that I hadn't register on my check in. On the second leg from Manchester to Singapore, I adopted a stewardess, pleasant and beautiful, as my daughter. She is Mo Shen from Iland, Taiwan has a good command of the Amoy or Taiwanese, my mother tongue. I have her and her colleague's picture taken and her e-mail address. I shall see them again.

There were a 5 and half hours layover in Singapore and we missed a free tour provided by the tourist bureau for the lay over passengers. The first one was fully booked and the second one hour later was too late. We were sitting by a small yet busy chips shop to be witness of its wonderful business. Two kinds of chips, potato and fish, mixed with a raw salted egg then deep fry with a very nice taste. Singaporean love them even with a label warning Danger in addictive. The clerk gave us two pieces sample and her manager explained to us.

We continued our flight to Bangkok BKK, the new airport for the city, and then took a free shuttle provided by the city tourists bureau to the old airport DMK to stay over night and took an early flight to Hong Kong. I was very careful to go through an airport taxi hub desk to get our taxi and double check with the cost. The clerk speaks good English and command the driver in details. It is up to the meter's reading plus a $50 Thai money for fee which is very reasonable.

Putting off our luggage, we walked back to the local street and got our dinner. It's like a small village in the old Taiwan with no high rises. Our noodle stand is on the street side while several non-Thai foreigners had taken foods from the operator. It's was a bowl of rice noodle for me and regular noodle for Amy plus an boiled egg, fish balls, and two or three pieces of pork intestines. It's about two US dollar and I like it very much. The next morning, the hotel provided a nice breakfast with dragon fruit, orange, and banana, etc. We got it done to Bangkok.

Visiting Napier, on the east of North Island, New Zealand/Carlos Pueblo

Visiting Napier, on the east of North Island, New Zealand/Carlos Pueblo
After Wellington, we continue sail north along the east coastal line of the north island of New Zealand to another lovely city of Napier. The port authority provides shuttle bus service for passengers to the city center. The first stop is by a beautiful garden in front of the city center, several blocks square like some of the ports we have passed by. I had had a leisure march toward the direction of the National Aquarium of New Zealand. The beach is dark color sand very unique than most white color sand beach, in between the Marina Parade Boulevard
and the beach, the city has arranged several facilities to serve the beach goers, like parking for the recreation vehicles with full set up. Small parks and gardens to beautify the scenery.

I chatted with the RV owners and they displayed and explained how they designed the vehicle. They are actually several kinds of Toyota minivan or utility vehicles with logical divisions of bed or beds, water tank shelf, food pantry, and folding furniture area, etc. It's very much compact than what I have seen in the United States camping area. A young man came to the port to join a group of 9 to operate an old sail boat for some multi purpose journey. He showed me how to make a second bed in that small van. If the boat is not at the sea, he would stay in his RV to save the cost of a motel on the Marina Parade. Another RV owner is a young lady sitting on the back of her utility Toyota with the trunk open and a small table also served as a desk. She was doing some lab top reading while the city park provides a free WiFi connection all over the beach and the park, as a matter of the fact, the entire city.

Stopping by the National Aquarium, I found a seat to use it's free WiFi offered by a city office on the next door for my i-phone to send my daily e-mail home. It's very nice and considerate of the locals to provide rest room free service for the visitors. I kept on marching along the beach toward another rock end not far away. There were few appeared on the lovely beach and might be the reason of not on the summer vacation yet. On the way back, I changed my route to the Marina Parade Blvd. to have a different view and I could approach to all the attractive home gardens to collect photos. This landscape reminds me some of the scenery of my Panama Canal Transit route last year on several central American ports, the same set up like fruits trees on the yards, motels for vehicles cruisers, small shops of all needs, etc.

I passed the 2nd shuttle stop and kept on marching toward the city center. A nice lady sport figure statue is on site to celebrate something significance which I forget. The city center is very attractive with antique cars drivers soliciting business. It is very lovely to walk at the small downtown and I shall describe more on my return visit. Of course, I did make it to the Clive Square and took a seat to rest and have some blooming magnolia photos.

Touring through 3 cities and a cruise in the Southeast Asia 2020/Carlos Pueblo

Touring through 3 cities and a cruise in the Southeast Asia 2020/Carlos Pueblo

Singapore Air offered a promotional fare for a round trip from Houston to Bangkok last year and I made it to be a tour of three Asian cities and a seven days cruise along the Vietnamese coastal line in the winter of 2020. It has been quite an experience during the outbreak of Wuhan coronavirus scaring among China, Honk Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, and Thailand where I have been in this 3 weeks tour.

First, this is a long haul of flight from Houston to Manchester, England, then to Singapore, Bangkok for a brief layover night to Hong Kong in order to hop on a cruise ship for a seven days cruise to Singapore for two nights, then flew to Bangkok again for three nights, and finally flew back to Houston. I shall describe in details how my impression is for this voyage in details.

I was very comfortable to locate all hotels and scenery significant to me on public transportation, light rails and buses, with minimum costs. I don't see any problems as I find my way and get around. I can command easily in several languages locally use like coming home. I like the weather, foods, and the hospitality of the locals.

I visited the Stanley Pier, the Central Station, Hong Kong University campus, etc. in Hong Kong and ate roasted goose and Chiao Chou rice noodle twice. I visited the Chinatown, the Orchard, and the Marina Bay garden in Singapore. I have had two days guided tours in Bangkok, a tour of four Buddhist Temples and a tour of floating market on canals, and a visit of the famous Chulalongkorn University campus.

My e-mail was hacked during my trip to the Southeast Asia/Carlos Pueblo

My e-mail was hacked during my trip to the Southeast Asia/Carlos Pueblo

On the second day of my visit to Hong Kong, I received several warning from my friends to warn me of my e-mail been hacked by a hacker who attempted to solicit money under a similar e-mail address which was not mine. Suddenly, I lost my connection of Yahoo and my Southwestern Bell e-mail address. I could only scramble to use a Gmail address to correspond with my daughter in Austin for my daily reporting of the traveling progress. I am sorry for all the inconvenient caused to you.

I have thought of what I have done wrong to cause this trouble. First, I did finally respond to an ATT e-mail to link to its web site to be continued of my record of e-mail usage. It might be a fake one and I am not sure. When I returned home, I did have a help chat with ATT to change my password and got my e-mail opened. I still need to chat with the Yahoo authority to find out who that that e-mail address impersonating me with yahoo.com address.

I did announce my apology on my blog site to my friends who were disturbed. One of them told me that he did chat with this person about the soliciting because he did have plenty of time and he was not afraid. On their e-mail exchange, he found out that this person only asked for $400 gift card help and asked him to give the gift card number.

A similar case has been occurred in 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina while I forgot to delete my check of e-mail use on a public desk computer at a hostel. I changed my e-mail password and was the end of such hassle.
