Visiting Damnoen Saduak Floating Market near by Bangkok, Thailand 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Visiting Damnoen Saduak Floating Market near by Bangkok, Thailand 2020/Carlos Pueblo
On the next day after the temple tour, we were on a five person group to visit the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market which was on the movie 007 The man with the Golden gun 1974. The floating market is quite popular in the Southeast Asia where people utilize the river and the canal as the mean of public transportation for the business. Small towns are formed and most of them become a tourist attraction. We passes by the rural area of Thailand and once we got closed the river and canal, we saw some fish ponds with small paddle wheel to move the water. I check the fish farm which grows the Tilapia which is a main dish on the cruise ship.
We stopped by a main river pier for a motor boat to take us to the market, actually a town by canals with many small boats peddling all kinds of foods. We bought tickets for a 30 minutes ride and I was not that comfortable since I used to the ocean cruising vessel. One of us in the group did try to purchase something and made a bargain which took some of our time. I saw some people did purchase foods to eat. I was glad that I had a great breakfast at the hotel.
We had had plenty time to visit on shore after the boat tour. Again, there are many stores for tourists. Our guide told us the business was slow due to the Wuhan virus otherwise the whole areas were difficult to move. We walked on both sides of the canal till our departing time. I don't recall that we have made any purchase.
There was an add on visit to an elephant park which Amy paid for a 30 minutes ride with an elephant. I was stubborn and not interested and was not allowed to take photos with the animal unless I purchased a ticket which I didn't.
Before the end of our tour, we were required to stop at a huge jewelry shop. Amy bought a ruby necklace. I asked the guide again for the direction of the campus of Chulalongkorn University. She told me just by the hotel following to the medical center by a golf course. I did see the gold course through the window in our room.

Visiting four Buddhist Temples in Bangkok, Thailand 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Visiting four Buddhist Temples in Bangkok, Thailand 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Nancy the beautiful guide took us to visit four Buddhist Temples in Bangkok, Thailand on our second day while we arrived in the city second time. These temples are four of the most famous 300 plus temples in the city. Thailand is one of the Buddhist nations in the southeast Asia. She is not only pretty but also very much well learned girl. It was a very quick and compact guided tour. I am a Buddhist and I do check my photos and find out the names of temples where I have visited, Wat Traimit, Wat Rachabophit, and Wat Arun. They are all gorgeous and unique very much different from those in China and Japan.
Wat Traimit is the Golden Temple with a 5.5 tons gold of current Buddha statue. It was build gradually throughout several hundred years and finally located to the current location nearby the Grand Palace on an island. The architectures are all very colorful and in harmony above all. We are allowed to enter the main temple with shoes removed. Nancy explained some of the significant and I understood very well because I studied the Buddhism and history very well when I was much younger in age and learned from my father and some distinguish monks.
She arranged the driver to pick us up once we finished one site, actually it was a private tour with only four of us. We went to the Wat Pho, the Reclining Buddha Temple. All temples we have visited is mainly hosted the present Buddha, the Gautama Buddha or we call Sakyamuni from the northern India about 2,500 years ago. He is a great teacher and philosopher. The reclining statue is a symbol of his enlightenment under a Bodhi tree and what is his enlightenment? It is very simple to live a meaningful way of life everyday. I copy it from a Vietnamese monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, from his book Buddha and Jesus are brothers.
The third temple is Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn with many beautiful ash towers on site. We Buddhists believe that the human body is a loan from the world; therefore, when we die, we do the cremation and return the ash to the world. She told me those ash inside the pagoda were rich folks and I could imagine. I taught her how to play the divination, a device developed in China and nothing to do with the Buddhism yet they were inside a gift shop for visitors to try. She was amazed.
Because I like to visit Chulalongkorn University, a distinguish engineering school and medical school, she took us to visit Wat Ratchabophit, King Chulalongkorn's Temple built in 1869. Almost every king of Thailand has built his own temple. In Thailand, every youth male must do his monk duty for one year like some of us do the military service or draft when we reached 18 or finished college. It is another beautiful temple.
We had had so much fun tour on temples and also passing through the most beautiful sections of the city. We passed by the Grand Palace, the residence of present King's mother, and many lovely city scenery.

Layover in Honolulu, Hawaii 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Layover in Honolulu, Hawaii 2019/Carlos Pueblo
On my way home to Houston, Texas, there was a layover in Honolulu, Hawaii, instead of flying directly from Sydney, Australia to Dallas, Texas. I got an opportunity to visit Waikiki briefly after a 14 hour flight. I took buses to check on three places, the Chinatown, the Marukami Noodle restaurant, and the Ala Moana Mall before returning to the Airport.
I love Hawaii and have visited the islands many times. I am very familiar with Oahu Island. After re-checking in the luggage, I walked out of the airport and took a bus to the downtown. Chinatown was still very busy even it was on Sunday. I checked on all kinds of market on those blocks without any of the shopping. I was wondering if I should take the bus to circle the island or go directly to Waikiki. I chose the later one and found Marukami Japanese Noodle Restaurant. I like this restaurant and have been several of its franchise restaurants in Japan even to two of the cities related to it, Himeji in Honchu and Takamatsu in Shikouku. The special part of the menu is large in quantity and economic in price which is very unique in Waikiki. We usually need to wait on a long queue to enter the restaurant and I am informed that this is the number one business volume of their franchise.
After the lunch, I decided to end my visit and took another bus to the Ala Moana Mall stop to be transferred to another bus to the airport. Due to a need to use the toilet, I went inside this huge mall and got lost on the way out. I took some photos for a tree with plenty of orange color fruits which I thought of persimmons. It is not the persimmon tree otherwise there would be on fruits left on the tree. It is a kind of fruit with a hard shell and attracted orange color.
The bus schedule in Oahu Island on Sunday is difficult to manage; therefore, I am satisfied with what I feel comfortable of the re-visit. With the time of my layover in Honolulu about 10 hours, I could hire a vehicle to visit more of the island. I do have a good memory of Hawaii where its weather is always like the spring in Houston, Texas.

Returning to Bangkok, Thailand 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Returning to Bangkok, Thailand 2020/Carlos Pueblo
There was almost a whole day time on our evening to leave Singapore; however, I would rather wait at the airport. It is not convenient to carry luggage around while touring the city while I am not confident with taxi or any hope of a free tour of at the airport. The inn clerk gave us a detail instruction to take the bus at the front to a light rail station to transfer trains to Changi Airport. There is an excellent public transportation system existed in Singapore. I was lucky to run into a group of airline service clerks to save some money on checking in luggage on line, spilled a noodle bowl and got a free re-fill, met a pretty clerk at a small eatery inside the waiting hall, and another adventure of taking light rail trains in Bangkok. I have saved money for my next trips indeed.
We went to the food courts near by the inn for the breakfast. A noodle stand owner chatted with me in Amoy about his Teochew cuisine. He answered all my curiosity of the Teochew food of my favorite, the duck, the fish all, and the crispy beef ball, etc. He also showed me his own product of the fine noodle with egg ingredient in it. I learned the knowledge when I was at schools in Taipei.
The clerk, an Asian Indian pretty girl, recommended me make a purchase of check in luggage on line in order to save 3 quarters of price. I had had the same problem last time when I boarded a budget flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong while it was in a hurry. This time, I had almost 9 hours to manage. Another airline clerk quickly took my i-phone to her supervisor for advice. Lucky me that I did charge the phone on the previous night. Very quickly I was on the credit card payment stage. It was about US$100 saving. They were surprised that I could pop on one or two Tagalog vocabulary.
A plate with Amy's fish ball soup noodle bawl fell due to a difficult design of the counter. Before I could figure out to purchase another ticket or not, the chef already prepared another bawl free of charge and another employee quickly clean the mess on the floor. We ordered two drinks on another eatery nearby with a Taiwan as the store name. Both clerks can speak Amoy and we had a good time in conversation. This Chiu-yueh, means Autumn Moon in Chinese, came to chat with us when she was off. She is a pretty girl and I say that I want her to be my daughter-in-law and Amy is not amused. Again, I didn't ask her address and take a picture together.
While asking direction and taking light rail trains to Bangkok Grand Hyatt, a lady at a tourist stand gave a 50% off discount for a group tour of temples at the city on the next day. After that, she gave me a detail of how to take trains to reach a station nearby the hotel. It was late at night and the long and identical name of stations confused the local and ourselves; therefore, we made the mistake. We also made mistakes on our way to the hotel. I almost bought a small box of Durian fruit to the hotel room and fortunately not due to the strange odor. That purchase of temples tour was proved to be excellent.

Arriving in Sydney, Australia 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Arriving in Sydney, Australia 2019/Carlos Pueblo
After 3 days and nights sailing, we arrived in Overseas Passengers Terminal, Sydney, Australia. We stayed overnight at the pier. There was a whole day and night at this great city. I selected a simple way to visit the Rock area under the great Sydney Harbor Bridge, marching along the circular Quay through the Sydney Opera House, then the Royal Botanic Gardens. I repeated once more at the same route after lunch at the ship.
There is a battery park as part of the Rock. Old Guns are in positions facing the harbor. It was a part of the beginning of the city, ancient Sydney Town Hall, Cathedrals, and city centers, etc. You can line up to purchase a permit to climb up to visit the great Sydney Harbor Bridge. I walked along a small strip of gifts shops with food stands and others. The huge ship was right by the pier called the Circular Quay on Sydney Cove to the famous Sydney Opera House. It is a popular place to visit. I took note of the light rail station for the train to the airport on the next day.
The Royal Botanic Garden is in adjacent to the Opera House with another Farm Cove by name. At first, I was not that impressed for the garden at all till I found a garden full of roses and some other colorful flowers. It is indeed a world class rose garden indeed. I can still identify several flowers on my pictures such as the dahlia, chrysanthemum, petunia, and more to make a excellent decoration. I made a return visit after a lunch on the ship and ran into a big wedding at the rose garden.
There were many Chinese tourists visiting the gardens on that day. I first ran into a Chinese lady on a rock seat facing the Farm Cove, a very nice bay by the garden. She was on her last day in Sydney of her company's assignment. She was reading something at her notebook computer. She was taking off in late afternoon to Shanghai, China. Another Chinese family were there when I was at the rose garden. This elder lady was very interesting to chat with me in Mandarin Chinese and introduced me her daughter whose Australian husband was also in the group. I was insisting my Taiwanese nationality and she attempted to correct me as the same of China. her husband had tried to pull her away from the conversation.
I love roses. I have had very much collection of rose gardens around the world and I always like to re-visit those gardens as often as I can. This is one of them. Sydney is a lovely city with distinguished appearance which resembles some parts of London, U.K.

Singapore on the second day 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Singapore on the second day 2020/Carlos Pueblo
The clerk recommended us to visit the Orchard section of the city, a shopping area. We first took a bus to a red line station of the light rail and transferred to the Orchard station. It is easier than walk to Chinatown station and take the blue line and the red line. I understand the reason why such of the recommendation, it is more economic and convenient. At an Orchard mall, another clerk learned my flowers interest, recommended us another place to visit, the Marina Bay Casino. After Marina Bay, we came back to Chinatown and marched back to the inn.
Singapore people are very proud of the Orchard, a modern shopping mall of all kinds. It was very busy outside of the mall down to the streets; however, inside of the high rise malls was not. Local merchants and foreign business are filled up the streets, such as Japanese and American, etc. I could tell many foreigners were visiting Singapore. Singapore is a rich and well established city state in the world. I can't stop my sigh of the people in Hong Kong, the same colonial ruler, the British Empire, with a total destination. I can see the people in Singapore are much happier than the people in Hong Kong.
We took the train again back to the Marina Bay Station, one stop above the Marina Bay South Pier where we got on to the train from the pier. The Casino is on a huge building with a curve ship on the top. There is an attractive fake peony flowers stand on one floor. The compact flowers arrangement make it very difficult to distinguish real from fake; however, the camera can easily test the truth after I upload them on the desk top computer. We continue to go up to the top of the building where there is a high rise garden with white artificial eggs floating on a pond and many Bougainvillaea flowers on every balcony of the hotel room, walk bridge to an elevator down. We ran into many fellow visitors coming up to enjoy the scenery.
I tried to find a fruit shop in Chinatown with plenty fresh cut fruits. Unfortunately, I got lost. I was attracted by a religious celebration of the Asian Indian, very colorful and interesting. There were plenty of foods prepared for the worshipers. Singapore is also a multi-cultural and diversified place to live. I think that I shall be very comfortable to live in this island. We had had a bowl of Fuchow fish ball noodle on a second floor of restaurant and some sweet red bean cakes. On our way back, also picked up two quava for our daily fruit ration.

Three days at sea to Sydney, Australia 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Three days at sea to Sydney, Australia 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Since we left Port Chalmers on the South Island, we have been to the Fiordland National Park for one day at sea and continued 2 days at sea toward Sydney, Australia by 20 knots per hour constantly. It is one of my favorite journey during a long cruise because I can visit my adopted daughters on board more often, chat with new acquaintance, enjoy my favorite programs even the casino.
Most of my daughters are working in restaurants and I know when and where I can find them available to talk to me eve if it is briefly. The ship work is very busy and they must work hard to meet the requirement. Previously I wore casual on board due to limited space in my luggage. Now I dress up in suits in the evening to show my respect of the business. I have many suits left after my regular job as an insurance agent and Amy will donate the cloths to the Salvation Army when I die. I feel fun when I dress formally.
Other than regular morning walk on deck 7, I also practice my golf swing on two simulators ar deck 13 backward. It is very nice set up at most of the older ships. I have made very much progress to swing , straight and powerful. Thanks to an old pro on board at the Pearl.
I am very glad to meet Engelbert, the photographer on ship. He taught me how to operate my Pentax camera. I also am very glad to meet another professional in photography, Nancy P. from Germany. I hope one day I can have her published books. I have had so much fun to chat with the worldwide travelers whom I meet on board because of my previous experience travelling at their countries. I am not quite sure if I can visit those parts of the world again.
I love cruise because that I like the facility and itinerary in compare to a land trip, plus the service. I have reduced some of my intake of foods now to avoid the danger of my chronicle disease diabetes.

Arriving in Singapore 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Arriving in Singapore 2020/Carlos Pueblo
We ended a seven day cruise in Singapore. Hong Kong passengers of 700 were allowed to disembark first. I followed some fellow passengers marching to the Marina Bay light rail station in order to get to the downtown. Singapore is a big city with the population with modern public transportation system. I got several local help to find our hotel on Havelock Road not far from Chinatown. The last help was from a Filipino nanny who walked us along a small river right across the inn. She was surprised that I could pup up a few sentence in Tagalog. It is a converted hotel from an old cooking oil warehouse everything is very neat and clean; however, we didn't have the same extra benefit as the one in Hong Kong because Singapore was not in depressed in tourism.
The Chinatown of Singapore is about ten minutes walk away on Havelock Road. I like Singapore because the local, the older one, speaks Amoy language, my mother tongue which is Taiwanese in Taiwan. Of course, Mandarin and English are both popular in this nation. We found a Teochew noodle eatery and ordered a bowl of soup noodle. Chinatown was very busy and we walked at least two sections and saw many visitors from all over the world. I paid very good attention of the tropical fruits which I missed much from Taiwan. There are plenty and excellent choice in Chinatown. Amy had tried several fresh cut fruits stored in clear boxes in refrigeration. I was shy away for the price that I was not used to. She thought that were alright in compare with Houston. The stinky yet delicious Julian fruit was fresh cut for two small pieces in a small plastic asked for 10 Singapore dollars about US$8. Hong Kong and Singapore are the same, they don't grow enough and import most of their foods, only the best quality from outside.
On the way back, we went to visit a small food court up to a ladder street. It is quite completed for the local and passengers to drop by for three meals. We later came here quite often in case of needs. My ATT/Yahoo mail was locked due to that hacker yet luckily I could still use the gmail to send letter to Michelle on my i-phone. I-phone is less weight than a lab
top computer even a notebook.

Re-visiting the Fiordland National Park, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Re-visiting the Fiordland National Park, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
We left Port Charmers in the evening overnight sail around the southern end of the South Island and up toward the Fiordland National Park of New Zealand. We visited three fjords one by one at a time in a day. Dusky Fjord 10:30 am-12:30 pm; Doubtful Fjord 2:30 pm-4:00 pm; Milford Sound 7:30 pm-9:00 pm. This is what I understand of the terminology of a fiord, a fjord and a sound in the area. A sound is a river valley that has been drowned due to the land sinking below the sea level. Fiords are created by glacial action that produces u-shaped valleys with stiff cliffs. These two are the definition by the cruise daily report. Fiords and Fjords are commonly used each other for the same thing and I don't see Sounds used in Alaska may be the glacier involved.
It got all passengers excited and piled up in every viewing area on the ship, platforms outside on deck 12, 13, and 14; Restaurants and bars on every decks; and all pedestrian paths on deck 7 and 13 or poor area, etc. I took several shots for new friends from Taiwan yet forgot to ask their address to send back pictures. It was windy and with a threat of rain. The cliff and water fall are very unique. I have had good memories of Alaska's, Chilean's and Argentina's Fjords. One gentleman from that Taiwanese group tells me the Norwegian's Fjord is even more beautiful. I could see the water falls flying down to the sea with steam blast and the captain slowed down the ship when we approached a large one at the Milford Sound. The cruise has been provided the only transportation to view the amazing scenery entirely in such short time and I don't see highway available. It has been kept in the original form, a premier World Heritage Sites.
Young people in both New Zealand and Australia like to jump from the top of the cliff or bridge to get their excitement. To do such sport, you must have a strong heart to hold the blood pressure.
I have established my rapport with daughters at restaurant especially at the O'Sheehan's, almost 24 hours in operation. I can sit at the restaurant to watch the performers and chat with the hostess if she is available, means not busy. Mary Lo is a lovely girl from Canton, China and residing with her parents in Canada and now in Lima, Peru. She was asked to stay one more month before her get-off date in Auckland.

How do I manage the out break of Wuhan Coronavirus in Houston, Texas/Carlos Pueblo
How do I manage the out break of Wuhan Coronavirus in Houston, Texas/Carlos Pueblo
We were traveling in the Southeast of Asia during January 24 to February 12 this year at the announcement of the out break of Wuhan Coronavirus. We flew from Houston to Bangkok, Thailand via Manchester, UK and Singapore, then layover one night in Bangkok DMK to continue our flight to Hong Kong. After three nights stay in Hong Kong, we embark at Hong Kong on January 30 for a week cruise along Vietnamese Coast and disembark in Singapore. Two nights stay in Singapore and left for Bangkok again for 3 nights. We were on our way through the same route back to Houston. We were aware how serious it had been all the time by the masks which people were wearing all the time and the forehead temperature check up all the entrance and exit of airports.
I posted my own self quarantine at home by excusing myself not attending an alumni luncheon. Self quarantine is just an extension of my self exile during these years after my unemployment in 2001. I have almost cut off my social contact with the my insureds and the outside in Houston. I have built a life of a self exile gradually after several attempts to go back to work and failed. This is how I manage my life of this self exile.
I sleep whenever I feel tired which is counted several times in a day. Usually, I go to sleep right after my shower at night about nine o'clock and have awake several times during the night for urination which is due to the diabetes. I would do some writing on my blog for something on my trips and go back to sleep before the day break till Amy wakes me up because my pet dogs friends are waiting in the morning.
After we have moved to the Del Monte Drive house, I have made many pet dogs friends in the subdivision; therefore, every morning I would go to visit them or meet them on the streets. Usually, I have walked 11 blocks about 2.2 miles in total distance for about 70 minutes and now due to the visit and chat with their owners that takes more than 2 hours to finish. I feel a need of two hours nap afterward. Most of my leisure time, I watch You Tube programs on the internet and Yahoo news which I like. I shall not let those news I don't like to bother me. I keep on writing on my blog. I go to cruises and make several land trips oversea and come back to write my journal. I believe that I am one of the most productive writers in the world.
The out break of the Wuhan Coronavirus has changed my traveling routine due to several factors facing me. I must help Arthur to have his left eye cataract procedure on April 8 & 9 which saves me to get into trouble in re-position cruise trips from South America and Europe. The virus out break stops all traffic in the whole world eventually and brings down the world economics. I am watching the You Tube reporting in Taiwan and the rest of the world to see how the politician to respond and they are very funny.
I have my future plan of my self exile life planned. I shall keep on playing two tennis in a week, take care of my home garden and yard, swimming during the summer, watching all You Tube programs which I like, and keep myself happy. I don't see anything can bother me. By keeping myself out of anxiety and stress of any kinds, I shall not be infected by the Wuhan Coronavirus.

After Phu My Port, the ship was continue sailing on the South China Sea toward Singapore. We were at a day at sea actually 36 hours sailing that was another kind of joy of cruising. I can visit daughters everywhere on the ship, walking on the decks, swinging golf, filling up my appreciation cards, and packing my luggage, etc.
Geographically, we were at the South China Sea all the time started from Hong Kong. It is quite a size of the sea as a part of the Pacific Ocean. After Singapore, I can see the famous Strait of Malacca on the map as the pass way to the Indian Ocean for the transit of the middle eastern oil to Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, and China. Actually, there is deep sea oil deposit discovered and therefore, the tension among China and other surrounding nations occurred. It is too far away to view the conflict area such as the West Sand Islands, or the South Sand Islands disputed area.
It was a time for me to say farewell to my daughters on board if I didn't see them again before the disembark. I adore these group of beautiful, good manners, and hard working young ladies. I may see them again in the future cruise adventure.
I had filled up many cards to cover my recommendation of good services for my daughters and some other distinguish male crew members to the ship's general manager. I turned them in gradually as I finished them. They would get them from their direct supervisors afterward and as their evaluation. I have been very pleased to do this ever since I found it.
It is a sad moment when it comes to an end of the cruise. I packed my luggage for the next morning to exit on the gangway. The party was temporarily be over.

Raining day at Port Chalmers, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Raining day at Port Chalmers, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
It was a raining day when we docked at Port Chalmers and I was limited to walk a few blocks along the town center, George Street, Wickliffe Terrace and turned immediately to Currie Street to go back to the poet hall through Grey Street. I still managed the small umbrella and two cameras for some flowers pictures.
It was also chilly and windy very miserable. I didn't know if there were many passengers taking buses to the near city Dunedin. I can have a view that city on the view bridge at the rhododendron park off the Church Street. I still remember the joy of hiking several places of the small town before.
I was a substitute guest for a dinner with an officer, Marian Olteanu the 1st Hotel Engineer. He says that he can't drive the vessel; therefore, he can't be promoted to a captain position. He is in charge of the ship's air conditioning system. We, another came back couple, had had a very enjoyable dinner conversation and even had a photographer taking our picture together. He gave us a copy for memory as well as a nice small chocolate box delivered to my room on the next morning.
We were sailing through three fiourds down to the southeast coast of the South Island on the next morning. It was clearly scheduled when to arrive and leave and that would be the final visit of New Zealand of this back to back cruise.

The ship was docked at the pier of Phu My, Vietnam 2020/Carlos Pueblo
The ship was docked at the pier of Phu My, Vietnam 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Phu My is not on my old Rand McNally map, is also a new container port for export. It is very closed to the old Saigon. There are two small strips of stores across a small ditch of the bay water, one for the eatery, small dishes of fried fish, squid, chicken drum, and vegetable, etc. A plate is costed for US$1.00. Another strip is for some souvenir sweat shirts, baseball caps, low budget items, etc. There is also another mobile strip unit for clothes inside the pier. We did inspect all three of them quickly and return to the ship eventually. It takes a while for this war torn nation to get ready for cruise style tourism.
We sat at the Cafe to watch uniform crew members shopping at the mobile unit, actually is a tent. We saw Lovely and her husband. She is the restaurant manager of Le Bistro and her husband is also on another assignment whom is not formally introduced to us.
Alan & Mary Hunt are from Seabrook, Texas near Clear Lake City, Houston. They had a plan to search his formal Vietnamese partner during the War. He has tried to locate him in vein during these years. Saigon trip takes about eight hours on excursion. I didn't see them after that day of conversation. I did find the Kanji for Joshua, their grandson's name. I'll send an e-mail to them.
A dinner with officers is held on every route for platinum plus latitude member. The officer was one of the ship engineer. He was on this ship when I was in San Juan, Porto Rico on Thanksgiving 2018. I was at a small inn waiting for a cheaper flight back to Houston and ran into a family got bumped off Jade due to machine failure. He remembered it and described how the ship made it to Miami with her own power. Another couple are from the UK. We have run into each other at least one time in Alaska trip recently.

Returning to visit Wellington, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Returning to visit Wellington, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Finally, we came back from Akaroa on the South Island to Wellington on the southern end of the North Island, yet it was still under the threat of rain all day. Professor Susan and I decided to walk at the downtown. After getting off the shuttle bus at the first stop by the campus of the Law School of the Victoria University of Wellington Ripitea Campus, we went to visit the Parliament Building, following Waterloo Quay to the Museum of New Zealand. I took the shuttle bus back while she continued to visit other places.
The Parliament building is across Lambton Quay from the law school which I was mistaken of a governmental building. We were bumped out for a 10 am visit and instead we walked out of the building after listening to a short presentation of the Parliament. There is only one house of the Parliament in New Zealand once the house decides to legislate, a procedure is to the general public for a vote of approval then becomes a law. I was attracted by a rose garden outside of the building and took some photos. We went to visit the old St. Paul's Church and the Welling Cathedral of St. Paul. We passed by the Wellington Railway Station.
On our way toward the National Museum, we passed by several interesting places like the high rises, a civic center, a city bridge then saw the unique design of the Museum not far away. We did visit the Museum inside. It is what everybody said that all New Zealand is in it. It was a repeat of my first visit of the Capital City a week ago. I was satisfied and decided to return to the ship. When I write this journal by checking to the map, I know that I miss the Wellington Botanic Garden not that far away.
Mary Ann, my daughter who did not make it in Auckland due to visa difficulty arrived. She had to ask her brother to take home and wait for several days to go back to Manila to fly to Wellington. It was an error of the employment agency. Most of the staff work for eight months for a contract and go off for two months for vacation while a restaurant manager like Nigel, Jenny's husband works for four months and the captain of the ship only works for two months and off due to the heavy stress of their job.

Visiting Nha Trang, southeast central part of Vietnam 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Visiting Nha Trang, southeast central part of Vietnam 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Nha Trang is on my Rand McNally map yet I like to find it out what it means in English or Kanji. Finally I got it. Trang is a surname like Chuang in Kanji or Pueblo in Spanish means village in English. Nha is a tooth or teeth in English; however, also means sprout in pronunciation like bean spouts. I translate it to sprouts village for Nha Trang, a city closed to the famous Saigon, Hu Chi Ming City in current day. We walked down to the main street for three quava, some yellow chrysanthemum flowers, and a college of ocean marine with a aquarium. We were transferred by the tenders provided by the cruise ship.
First, I found a floor vegetable and fruit market with several lady owners sitting on the ground to attend their products. I bought three pieces of quava for one US dollar. A lady on another seat gave me a cup of her thermo-bottle to rinse the fruits to eat. The fruit is as big as my fist. We walked to a small alley with plenty of chrysanthemum flowers growing on pots like at the garden of Ha Long recreation center. The residents put the flowers pots in their door front like a home garden. The scenery reminded me 60 years ago of the rural area of Taiwan. Unemployed men were sitting on the ground playing cards.
We came back to the ship direction and were attracted by a building with some flowers. It is a small college of the ocean marine with a small campus. The campus is utilized for the on and off shutter buses and taxi of tourists. We watched a gardener to water the orchard plants on the tree trunks, then following the flowers to an aquarium. I believe that aquarium is a part of the college. It is not fancy equip yet lively with many live fish swimming around. It is also full of marine sample and also precious life pink reef of many kinds. Finally, we came to a large pond of sharks and some other kinds of big fish. They do get along well. I took many photos for my own collection.
Back to the pier for our tenders. It was pretty warm on that day in the afternoon. We were sitting at the cafeteria chatting with a fellow Taiwanese lady of my age. Her German husband is a retired scientist and live in Vancouver, Canada. There were so much for us to discuss back to the 70's in both Taiwan and America. Evan Yeh came to join us. She is a pretty girl engineer who graduated from an university of science and technology at my hometown Huwei in Taiwan, as a matter of fact the campus is on the old high school I attended and taught chemistry when I was growing up in Taiwan.

Returning to visit Akaroa, East South Island, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Returning to visit Akaroa, East South Island, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
This Akaroa is one of my favorite garden township in the whole world, if there is another one in competition. We came down directly from Picton on the north tip of the South Island passing Wellington nearby on the south end of the North Island for a reason I guessed for the ship to sail the entire night to kill the time. I walked to the light house direction by visiting the Garden of Tane, then back to the city center for the rose garden street, Rue Jolie, and extended to a large homestead garden home on the next street corner. Then, I kept on marching toward the Beach Road to the War Memorial Rose Garden. Professor Susan came to meet me at a door step at a shopping center and we went to visit the old French Cemetery. On the way, I found two protea flower trees in front of an ice cream store.
I intended to take some more pictures of the dahlia lot at the corner of the Beach Road and Aubrey Street. The homeowner has made the flowers lot very attractive. There is a house with very beautiful geranium and rose in the front and lady owner was the one recommending me the rose street in the city center and gave me geranium name. I entered the Garden of Tane from Aubrey Street entrance directly to the swing and slide center for children. I had had plenty of time to take photos for all the ancient huge trees in the garden. The city marks trees of their name and original from. Some of them were planted in celebration of the end of wars or the Queen's enthrone, etc. The city is still planting trees with marks on the ground. The garden park is quite a size yet I can circle around repeatedly. I did go to the old cemetery and a view point several times.
From the light house back to the town center, I turned right on Bruce Terrace Street to Rue Jolie, the rose garden street. I was guided by the flowers on the street fence to a large and beautiful homestead about at least three acres lot. It is a two story contemporary home with very charming garden in the front with roses and others, fruit trees, apple, peach, orange and lemon, etc., beans, strawberry, grape vines. Several cute pet dogs won't bother a fence chicken and a small stream flow through the garden. I chatted with the owner who managed the garden entirely. On my way back to the rose garden street, I ran into two daughters from the ship, Mariz was with a group and Evangeline was by herself. I took them to visit the large garden home.
The War Memorial Rose Garden was still in full blooming. I couldn't resist to get more photos. Finally, I felt that I should rest for a moment and found my spot on a door step in front of a closed door. Last time, I asked people how to get my free WiFi connection here. Professor Susan suddenly appeared. I accompanied her to visit the old French Cemetery. On the way, I found another of my favorite flowers, the protea of South Africa. I saw this flowers in Houston's super market flower shop and at Maui Hawaii University agriculture extension garden in Hawaii. The flower is original from South Africa and transplanted in Florida and Hawaii. It looks like the lotus shape yet more complicated pedals. It is required high elevation warm in the summer and cold in the winter. I don't usually see it during my traveling around the world even in Hawaii and Florida.

Cruise Ship docked at Chan May, Vietnam 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Cruise Ship docked at Chan May, Vietnam 2020/Carlos Pueblo
The advertisement of the cruise indicates that Chan May port is related to Hue/Da Nang of the two famous Vietnamese cities and actually it not. It is a gateway to those two cities and almost a whole day land excursion. I was not prepared and did try my best to walk outside the port for about a mile and back. Amy was not happy at all because that we had made such a long distance to reach here. I asked her for he lead and she was not prepared either. If I had a longer time, I would like to visit Thick Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese monk who had enlighten me almost forty years ago by reading his book, Jesus and Budha are brothers. This is what my understanding of Buddhism while we define one of the insight procedure Pratyeka, enlighten by reading or any kinds of observation. Another method is called Sravaka, by listening some one like current Buddha's lecturing and gaining the insight or enlightening. He is 93 and is unable to speak as the Google indicated.
Amy didn't like to be back to the ship and still waiting some one she knew from the ship would let her join them to go out, of curse, she didn't know the old capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, the monk, or Da Nang, her only experience was to order the delicious Vietnamese Pho noodle. I took her to have a golf lesson which I had become very good at the simulator on the deck 13 outside. She hits well after all.
We took the lunch at the Cafe on the deck 12 rear. We got the opportunity to meet many daughters and some male staff and I was glad. They helped me to explain how difficulty that they ran into arguing with the local motorcycle drivers or taxi drivers about the fees. There are tricks among some of the local drivers to add on to the cost. I always avoid to spend the extra money other than what I have already paid to the cruise liner and I feel no regret so far. It is a vacation after all.
We had a fee waived dinner at the French Restaurant at night. I have awarded two vouchers to dine at two fee restaurants, usually we selected the steak house and an Italian Restaurant.
This time we change the menu to Le Bistro for the French Cuisine. The manager is Lovely, our daughter and another daughter Venus as our waitress. We were recommended for scallops, steak, and snails as the side dish plus a bottle of wine.
After the dinner, Amy went to the show at the theater and came to meet me at the Atrium piano bar. Usually, I would stay at the atrium seat or up stair at the O'Sheenan's to watch the life piano performing.

Returning to visit Picton on the east coast of S. Island in New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Returning to visit Picton on the east coast of S. Island in New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
On the second back of my New Zealand trip back to back, the Captain made a change of route from sailing to Wellington after Napier directly to Picton and Akaroa on the South Island and then back to Wellington on the North Island for a reason why I was not awared. This time I had had a hiking partner, Susan Berdahl, the retired professor of Texas A&M Laredo campus. She is a good mountain hiker and has guided me to two hiking tracks, the Tirohanga Track and the Victoria Domain Walking Tracks. After the hiking, we went to visit two lovely British bulldogs by the Picton Marina and their owner when I was here five days before.
We turned southeast from Waikawa Road to the first track, the Tirohanga and up. She did study where she likes to visit and knows how to read maps. This Waikawa Road is to the Waikawa Bay with many pretty home gardens which I have described previously. The beautiful garden of a luxury hotel is right by the route. It is not that difficult for hiking and route is established someway friendly to hikers; yet still requires a good pair of knees. We can see some side traps to catch predators which are the bother of the local birds and their eggs. The mountain view is very unique for the people from Texas Plain even in West Texas where I don't see the mountain hiking is a habit and also the view is very much different. I met a German American couple from Florida used to live at Bryant, Texas. He is a Ph. D in physics and now working in a hospital and is very proud of his making here in the States. We came down from another route to the edge of the town center. While on a country road, we ran into a big pig following us to cross a brook, or a small clear creek and keeping on. I asked a local lady about that pig, she suddenly remembered a small pet pig a couple months ago and promised me to inform the owner. I took some pictures for memory and Jenny and Susan all liked to see him. We also visited and chatted with a owner of two sheep in his backyard. He was cutting some grasses outside in a storm ditch for them. It is a very pleasant subdivision which the homeowners pay very much attention to their home gardens.
We walked pass a bridge called Coathanger Bridge on Picton Marina to the Victoria Domain Walking Tracks, another hiking and another challenge to me. We finally reached to Bob's Bay down to the bottom. That German scientist and his wife went down to swim. I ran into my fellow Taiwanese lady, Ms. Kuo Ru-chien and her Japanese lady friend from Wellington. I promised her to send her photos when I got home. This Victoria Domain is a huge track with several territory to cover that I wish one day I can do it again.
I insisted to visit two of my dog friends by the Picton Marina and dog run field before Waikawa Road. I met them on my firs visit and they still recognized me and no barking this time. The young man owner tells us that they are genuine British bulldogs named Barba and Bim. I got his e-mail address and will send him pictures of the lovely dogs.

Visiting Ha Long Bay, Vietnam 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Visiting Ha Long Bay, Vietnam 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Ha Long Bay is famous of its scenery islands and junk boats now a good size of dragon head tourist vessels on the pier by the huge cruise ship. At the busier time, the cruise passengers would do the islands excursion directly from the cruise to the boats; however, I didn't know and didn't prepare for such expenditure. Instead, we marched to the city center to visit a recreation center and its garden, the main street, an unsuccessful luxury residential and commercial project, etc. The whole seven days cruise is a management of time during our nineteen days tour of the Southeast Asia and I know the limit of a tour of a cruise. I'll be in bus all the time to visit the famous, Hai Phong, Hai Noi, Hue, or Saigon, etc. Vietnam only open her container ports for the ocean liners.
Amy doesn't know more than I do either. We saw the recreation center, a nice complex with ancient gate type arc in the front and several old oriental plume blossom, umei in Japanese language. They are very unique and charming in pink and I am not sure they are plume or peaches. It reminds me our visit one year at Osaka Castle of the Peach Gardens full of peaches and plume blossom. The gardeners manage many different colors flowers in the garden such as yellow chrysanthemum and I wonder how they can make it in the early spring. We then walked into the main street, a highway separated the city business and residential combination area. I saw hotels and stores on the west side and restaurants on the east side toward the beach.
A huge platform is at the south end of the restaurants section. It is originally for the city gathering obviously with a descending seats to some kinds of outdoor performance. Some cracks on the concrete ground due to poor workmanship and buildings on the edge in one side shown unfinished. Obviously the project is interrupted. Another eye catching luxury residential and commercial projects are next to the platform. They are familiar to me from some documentary television programs in the ghost town in China, beautiful yet no body occupy. I came back toward the recreation center and the ship passing by the second street behind the main street on the restaurant side. People shacked their head when I asked about the luxury buildings.
I ran into a group of high school students on their graduation ceremony. Boys and girls were on their ancient custom with sword and fan at hand. I asked a pair for their pictures then the joined the group for me to take some more pictures. One of the lovely girls has Kanji writing on her face said I am cold moon. I started my question if she learned the mandarin. She said just started in high school. I promised to send them photos when I went back to Houston.

Returning to visit Napier, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Returning to visit Napier, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Napier is another lovely township on the North Island of New Zealand on the eastern coast. I had had a tour of the beach park on the south direction toward the National aquarium and the city center on last visit about 4 days before. This time, I change my direction toward the north on the beach. It is all started with two gardens in front of the city center, Reef and Sunken Gardens. Then, I make a turn west across the city to the Clive Square which has a lovely lotus pound and flower garden. Finally, I leisurely walk through the city center to enjoy with crowded tourists. There is a restaurant even called Long Star and I know what that means in Texas.
First, the attracted gardens are started with a wall like boundary with many pots of different kinds of flowers. It is well designed and planned by the city park authority and maintained.
I ran into two of my daughters, Angela of the Azura hostess and Krisma of the Cagney's Steak House and recently promoted to be the manager of the O'Sheenan's. I have taken some of their together photos and ready to send them. Before reaching the War memorial Center, there is another lovely garden, the Sunken, with lots of lot and I check on the colorful pictures and find the small size of dahlia flowers are among those pretty flowers on the lots. Dahlia is one of my favorite flowers and I have had many photos collection in the gardens of the world.
The city's War Memorial Center is on the edge of Sunken Garden. I went inside to visit. New Zealand has no quarrel with the rest of the world and going to many wars are due to the fact of the British rule. I have been many parts of the world and seen the memorial center and monument. Some of them even listed all the wars which locals have participated, i.e. the Malaya which reminds me the Malaysia Independent has been an independent war involved.
I remember a fresh cut of Magnolia flower on a concrete bench on top of Tauranga hill. It is quite beautiful in white color different from what we have in our garden and I like to find them in the city center. I was a little bit late and the flowers were fading away, yet I got my satisfy with the lotus blossom in the square garden. They were blooming in a round shape pound with a fountain. Again, they are not huge in size yet very charming, elegant, and grace.
I Walked back toward the bus first stop in front of the two gardens and the Long Star Bar. I found another daughter Evangeline eating in a Chinese restaurant. She needs to comfort her stomach after the menu on the ship galley. I need mention that there are many antique vehicles for hire in the city center and I am very impressed of their excellent maintenance.

Taking buses to Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, Hong Kong 2020/Carlos Pueblo
Taking buses to Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, Hong Kong 2020/Carlos Pueblo
It was a time to embark at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal for our week long trip to Vietnamese Coast. The clerks at the hotel gave us a second recommendation, by two buses instead of a light rail train to the Diamond Hill then transferred to a bus. I went on to check the bus stop across the street from the hotel for the next morning. Hong Kong is a big city with an excellent public transportation system and our cost is very minimum. This terminal is converted from the original runway of the famous Kai Tak International Airport. Again, we had had an excellent view of this lovely city. I have been very familiar with the boarding procedure of the ship and waiting is not a problem. We were on board before noon. I could see the precaution procedures for the Wuhan Coronavirus, mask cover on every staff and the forehead and ear temperature check up, etc. A very detail form was filled before checking in about the health questions.
Usually, I would step up to deck 8 mid-ship O'Sheenan's Restaurant for a plate of fish and chip, then go up to deck 12 Garden Cafe to finish the lunch. I ran into Lovely and Connie, the Assistant Maitre D'hotel and the hostess of the restaurant. I showed off my relationship with daughters on the cruise line and they were impressed. Lovely even removed her mask temporarily in order for us to complete the adoption procedure, taking several photos together and leaving her e-mail address for me to send her photos back later when I got home. We have had many mutual friends within the company and she knows almost every one whom I mention to. She is a manager to the French Restaurant, Le Bistro, on deck 6 mid-ship in the evening and during the day, she is rotated among some busy restaurants. Connie is the hostess at O'Sheenan's and is from Honduras.
Before April, 2016, I had had 4 cruise trips with the ship Jewel, the same one I just finished in New Zealand and Australia late last year. Only after that 2016 a trip across the Atlantic with Jade, I have intensified my travelling in cruises in this company. Even though the company moves its staff around its fleet of vessels yet I am familiar with the old ships and mostly the services. I feel that taking a cruise is better than taking a land trip, more relaxing and convenient.
What do I do most of the time on cruise? I go hiking when I am off the ship and find something to do when it is a day or days at sea. Recently, I find swing golf at the simulator on deck 13 outside is very interesting. In the evening, I would sit down at the atrium bar or the Magnum bar to listen to the performing pianists. Now, I select vegetarian diet and quit wine drinking for my diabetes and feel less pressure to my stomach.

Returning to visit Tauranga, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
Returning to visit Tauranga, New Zealand 2019/Carlos Pueblo
It was still fresh for me to return the visit of Tauranga Bay. I took it as a nice routine hiking for the trip toward the hill top on the fist of the arm shape of the city. I walked on the same path, the Mall Street along the beach on one side and back to the Marine Parade on the other side of the beach with about 4 hours total on the march. The two missionary were still working on the side green of the path and we had had a nice chat yet no more bible study. On the way up, I ran into a retired music professor form our Mexican border city Laredo, Texas and directed her to select the ladder path instead of the service route. On the top, she ran into some other passengers from the ship and got the information about the White Island Volcano on a direction of a long strip island and the smoke was still up slowly. We were departed when we reached a street corner on the Marine Parade, I chose to go back to the ship and she continued to visit some other scenery.
I enjoy very much on a cruise trip. Usually, I get up early to have my breakfast, usually better than at home. I shall have an omelet and oat meal at the O'Sheenhan's on deck 8, the I shall go up to deck 12 Garden Cafe for some fruits, some watermelon, pineapple, apple, honeydew, and cantaloupe, etc. I don't have that many to choose at home. Then, I shall get myself ready for the disembark and doing my daily march. At home, I walk 2.2 miles in the morning.
After returning to the ship, I shall stop by the O'Sheenan's for two scoop of ice cream to make up my lost of sugar on marching while I am not allowed at home. I'll have my lunch afterward and a long nap following up. Usually, I'll swing some golf at a golf simulator on deck 13 outside. I am getting better and better after that old professional teaching me how to stand and bend my knees and swing.
The dinner is coming very early every day. Usually, I select the second restaurant on the mid ship on deck 6. I can get closed to my daughters. It is also provided to me an opportunity to make friends with fellow passengers. I usually go to the piano on the atrium on deck 7 or the Magnum's by the Le Bistro Restaurant on deck 6. I'll come back to the OSheenan's to chat with the hostess daughter and manager.
I have my way to measure the cost of a cruise including the airfare and my conclusion is that cruise trip is more economic that a land trip after all.
