Visiting St. Johns, Antigua/Carlos Pueblo
St. Johns is
a big town of 80,000 population, organized streets in the
downtown
area. Frame buildings were built on the hill long time ago,
I would
estimate more than 100 years ago. I see a museum with an old
locomotive engine
which should be for the purpose of hauling sugar
canes from
the farms to the refinery as I was familiar with in my
childhood in
Taiwan. My 4 time visits of this town is mainly the old
Cathedral, a
Burger King Restaurant, and some downtown section
before returning
to the ship.
The
Cathedral was built on the top of the hill with twin towers yet not
quite finished.
I used my binocular to look the quiet Caribbean Sea and
the harbor.
Behind the main building, there are steps decent to a locked
back gate to
across a street to the Antigua Girls Senior High. This is my
favorite
spot that I can have a break with the bay wind coming from the
beach.
I go to the
Burger King restaurant for the internet connection because
the internet
on board is not as efficient as on the land yet I only have
had very limited
time for free. One of the purposes of the cruise trip is
to reduce
dependence of internet in my daily life.
I extended
my marching territory to some area on my final visit of the
town. I went
to a post office to find if there was a Taiwanese Embassy
which I
could make a visit. The Post Office was not opened that day or
it was at a
lunch break and I went to a casino to use a toilet instead. I
asked a
supervisor of a black Jack table about my inquire. I showed her
the business
card from that diplomat at St. Kitts with the Chinese
Nationalist’s
flag on it. This brief conversation created a whole discussion
on the
table. The supervisor had an answer when I came out of the rest
room. She
says that there is no Taiwanese Embassy here but Chinese.
I was sorry
for that the island nation missed Taiwanese financial aid. She
says that it
is alright that they can get it from China.
