Visiting Basseterre, St. Kitts/Carlos Pueblo

Visiting Basseterre, St. Kitts/Carlos Pueblo

This 23 days back to back cruises makes me to visit Basseterre, St. Kitts
the second and third time in 10 months. I have been excited to visit the
island again because that I can march to the Taiwanese Embassy on the
outskirt of the town center as my daily exercises. Again, the second time
was on Saturday, the Embassy was closed; however, on the third time visit,
I did meet the first secretary, a senior diplomat. I have visited two of the
17 existing Taiwanese Embassies in the Caribbean, the other one is Belize.

The Embassy is located in an upscale residential area, a converted one with
two story frame house and a nice front garden yard while on the back yard,
there are mango tree and two star fruits trees over the fence on the neighbor’s
yard. This young diplomat was different from the one who received me on
my first visit. I was expected to see the ambassador who used to be the managing
director of the Taiwanese Liaison Office in Houston, Texas. Ambassador Kao is
back to Taipei, Taiwan for the time being.

Around the residential neighborhood, I saw many tall trees with red fruits similar
to the wax apple in Taiwan. It is called parkee by the locals. A young lady tells me
that this fruit must be cooked in order to eat it similar to the breadfruit which is
also found on the yard here. I am very surprised that there is a small neighborhood
Chinese restaurant. I chatted with the lady owner whose husband was inside the
kitchen. Their business is solely for the locals. There are some larger Chinese
restaurants at the town center for the tourists. I know that Chinese immigrants
have been settled here in the Caribbean for many generation.

There is a casino near by the entrance to the port where we can use their rest
room and free internet connection outside. I set there twice for two afternoon,
the first time was at a stormy afternoon and the second time was a sunshine
afternoon while there was a pretty blonde smiling passing by and smiling at me.
That was Ainura, my daughter from Kyrgyzstan.
