The political party type in Taiwan/Carlos Pueblo
Recently, a
piece of news in Taipei was caught in my eyes on my daily viewing
of political
talk shows on YouTube. The story is that a speak man of a Mayor
candidate of
Democratic Progressive Party asks a fellow party councilwoman
who praises the
incumbent Mayor who seeks the re-election as an independent
of his
achievement during his tenure as the Mayor instead of helping her party’s
nominee. Even
though Taiwan has been practiced the Western democratic
system ever
since 1996, the Nation is still with an unique political operating
systems.
Both DPP and KMT, the Chinese Nationalist, are not like the Democrat
and the
Republican in the United States. Membership Identification and fee,
Party Rules,
the Party Doctrine and the chains of command, etc. are clearly
defined and
obeyed. The President of Taiwan must be a Chairperson of the
incumbent
Party.
Taiwan has
been under the Chinese Nationalist rule for more than 70 years. The
Chinese
Nationalist is a Lenin’s Bolshevik type of political organization similar to
the Communist
Party of the world. When I was helping to receive those funders
of DPP in
Houston, Texas, I had had an opportunity to chat with one of the funder
Frank Hsieh,
a philosopher, attorney, and a Mayor of a major city in Taiwan, and
the premier
under the first DPP Presidency. He explained the need of such party
form during
that time to solidify a humble opposition force against the might
KMT power. Some
30 years later, the Taiwanese voters can’t wait no more and
they are
looking for a true democracy like the U.S. You can identify yourself by
your voting
experience to the party and be affiliated to that party for the time being.
If you
desire to get involved in political position, you must convince voters to vote
For you, of
course, must go through primary and final voting in November of the
election year,
very simple yet not easy. The Party cannot help you or guaranty you
anything.
A city like
Houston with 1.7 million population, our ancestors set up a rule to prohibit
any
political affiliation for every candidate to run for city positions such as the
mayor
as well as
the council person and I wonder if it is the reason that it is so boring, not
like City of
Taipei or any kinds of election in Taiwan. American voters move on for
their life
after the election. Some time they do regret for their neglecting of some
election.
