Travelers
shopping/Carlos Pueblo
Michelle was
passing through Paris, France to change the airplane to
Chengdu,
China and then, to Kathmandu, Nepal. She was amazed that
Chinese
travelers were shopping crazily. She asked me how did they
have such
money. My answer is very simple that kind of shopping is
for business
and for a profit in a small scale.
Traveling to
Europe is a big deal in Asia and have announced to your
relatives
and friends so that they are aware of it. They may like you to
purchase
something that is expansive at home, of course, they will pay
you back
with a tip most of the time. One day when I was at Frankfurt,
Germany and
ran into a Taiwanese tourist guide on a street corner, she
had a list
of shopping items and wondered some items if she could get
paid. Of
course I advised to be sure to call the person and speak frankly.
A pretty
Taiwanese girl brought her mother and friends for their European
tour and
recommended me purchase a luggage in Germany for the best
price.
Travelers know what the best of their foreign trip.
After Chinese
Communists revolution in 1949, the new regime had forfeited
all private
land and house, the proletarian. During the 80’s, China opened up
for the
international investment and leased out those lands to be built as the
factory
sites. Those local cadres in charge of signing the lease all benefit from
such policy.
They have become the first wave of the rich in Chinese society.
After the
Chinese economic boom, another wave of prosper business owners
join to the
affluent. People’s income improved gradually and plenty of work.
Some Chinese
citizen can afford almost all the tourist program over the world.
Travelers
shopping, of course, is on the list especially in the airport. Most of the
Host nations
are appreciated this phenomenon.
There is no
need for me to do the travelers shopping. U.S. is a free market system
and the
market is open except Tabaco and the tariff is at minimum. Nobody is
interested
to ask me to carry something for him from abroad. The priority of most
people is
variety of income tax, property tax, mortgage payment, vehicle note, all
kinds of
insurance, etc. Unless high income people, you must satisfy such demand
first and
then considering the luxury or not even on your list. I call it frugality.
