Visiting Dresden University of Technology/Carlos Pueblo

Visiting Dresden University of Technology/Carlos Pueblo

The University is on the other direction of the old town from Dresden hbf,
the central station, from the old town Dresden. I selected this raining day
to visit this old institution established in 1825. I passed by a Orthodox
church on the main road of Fritz-Lofffler Strabe. The architecture outlook
is quite different from a regular from a Catholic or a Protestant. The University
is located in a nice mixed neighborhood of residential and commercial area.
I had asked two Chinese students for the exact location. I was not surprised
for their choice of here for their study. I reached as far as a library or a student
center yet I was not allowed to enter without a card to use the facility.

A roommate of the hostel told me his reason of attending the University. He is
from a city of 50,000 inhabitants south of Dresden, Bamberg. After high school
graduation, he worked one year to save money for his study at the college. As
I understand that the tuition is free for any kind of public education ever since
Bismarck era and now has been extended to most of the European Union nations;
However, the student is still needed to manage his own room and board. He
calculated carefully between Munich and Dresden and finally made his decision
to the later because of the cost. Munich was in West Germany while Dresden was
in East Germany. Dresden is still considerably cheaper in living expanse in compare
to Munich and I fully understand his choice. As a parent of two college graduates,
we all have been through this process.

A week ago, I was reading a repeated story of defaulted student loan issue. I have
thought this matter for a long time. There are many reasons of the default like any
of the other bank loans, real estate, personal, or business. People always need
money to spend. This roommate has made a calculation and decided to go through
his personal investment of his college education. This is involved several issues to
battle in his mind, the cost, the quality, and the job opportunity in the future. Of
course I know that he will do well, he speaks well in English and he has his logic well
to explain his action. He was going back to move his furniture and financial statement
to satisfy his landlord. He will be majoring in the information technology, almost a
guarantee of job after graduation.
