Formosan Society member hopes Taiwan to fly
Own flag

EDITOR'S NOTE: Last week, the Auburn Bulletin ran a column by local citizen Anne Perry on the media's coverage of the Taiwanese crisis in the 21st Olympic Games in Montreal. Because the Taiwanese intended to march in opening ceremonies under the flag of the Republic of China, the Canadian government would not allow their admission into the games.
The following column ·was written by a member of the Auburn club of the World Formosan Society﹒The individual will not be identified because in Taiwan it is against the law to write derogatory statements against the government; therefore. The view is intended to represent that of the group as a whole.
******
We read with great concern the special column written by Anne Perry, "Media Coverage hasn't told whole Olympic story”," in your paper July 14.
As native Taiwanese who have lived and been educated under Nationalist China's rule for 28 years, we would like to make our own comments about the Olympic story.
1The"One China" policy which the Canadian government holds is absolutely correct. This is recognized by the UN and both sides of the Taiwan Straight. Of course, the Republic of China (ROC) can't represent Mainland China. The Canadian government admitted the Taiwan team to participate in the Olympic Games only under the name of Taiwan and her national flag and anthem (Not those of the ROC's). These facts indicate that Taiwanese athletes can only represent Taiwan.
This means also that there are two countries: One China (PRC) and one Taiwan.
2. The flag, anthem and the name "Republic of China" that the Canadian government is against originated from a so-called "Revolutionary party"一- KUOMINTUNG (KMT).The flag, song and name belong only to that party and not to Taiwanese or Chinese. In Chiang’s regime, party, country and Chiang are mixed together. Not only Chiang himself and his family represent both party and country, but Chiang has established himself to be higher than the country - like a god. Chiang Kai-shek was a long-time dictator and so is his eldest son, Chiang Ching-kuo, who now rules the island. Their regime frankly cannot represent the Chinese or Taiwanese.
In reference to Perry's comments on Nixon’s“Shanghai Communiqué." this didn't recognize that Taiwan belongs to

The People's Republic of China; it only points out that the Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Straight think that Taiwan is a part of China. Nixon did not betray Taiwan; he did not say that Taiwan belonged to the PROC in the "Shanghai Communiqué.”
Remember also Jimmy Carter's China policy will not sacrifice the Taiwanese in an effort to establish a relationship with them.
Those of the nations which recognize .PROC do not admit the Peking territorial claim over Taiwan. For example, on April 23, 1964, French President Pompidou (then Premier) made it clear that the act of recognition in no way implied French acquiescence to Peking's territorial claim to Taiwan. In his view,“Taiwan was detached from Japan; .but it was not attached to anyone under the. Peace treaty with Japan"; hence, Taiwan's indeterminate status "must be decided one of these days, taking the wishes of the Taiwanese people into consideration.' ,
The "indeterminate" status of Taiwan is disturbing. The PROC and ROC both claim to represent all of China including Taiwan. In fact neither of them legitimately represents Taiwan. The Manchu Dynasty parted with Taiwan when it was given to Japan in 1895 and it has never been given hack to China by any world treaties since that time.
The ROC has no legitimate claim either. The ,exiled Nationalists Chinese from the mainland rule Taiwan only because the tyrannical Chiang Kai-shek had tens of thousands of Taiwanese tortured and murdered when he took over in 1947.
Taiwan belongs to the Taiwanese people and hopefully in the future they can rule themselves, fly their own flag, have their own anthem, and send their own athletes to the Olympic Games.

我是非訪奧運村不可。
