Visiting Manchester, England/Carlos Pueblo
There are
several reasons brought me to Manchester, England and
I like to
describe them. First, my neighbor Ed passed the Singapore
Air one way
ticket promotion from Houston IAH to Manchester to
Me and I
made it before the end of period. Secondly, my classmate
at Auburn, Janet
Crawford was a graduate from Manchester University
In the 70’s
when there was a young Chemistry professor had some
research
corporation with our graduate program and she was here due
to that
reason. Later, she married my roommate, Ralph. I went to visit
them in
Chicago, Illinois before their retirement to Knoxville, Tennessee.
Thirdly,
Manchester is a famous city with the industrial heritage during
that time of
the industrial revolution in textile. Industrial revolution has
made England
become British Empire.
The plane is
landed at Manchester Airport and replaced the crew then
continue its
route to the Eastern Asian, Singapore. I took a shuttle bus
to the City
Center and walked to my hostel near the Piccadilly Garden,
not a real
flower garden yet a big square for the gathering of citizens.
I saw a
Chinatown near the Garden and went to check immediately
after release
my luggage. There is a bazaar type of food stands on one
end of the
Garden with fruits vendor. I bought some inexpensive items
for my daily
ration. I had a late lunch one day at a Cantonese restaurant
and bought a
big lobster of Irish Straight and cooked it at the kitchen of
the hostel.
One day, I
marched to the campus of the University of Manchester via
the Piccadilly
Train Station where I paid my senior discount pass. The
University
is the largest in student enrollment in the United Kingdom, of
Course, also
famous of the quality of education. I saw the Faraday Hall in
name of the
famous electrical-chemist, the Faraday theory which I learned
at high
school chemistry and also physical chemistry in college. I saw a
set of Lunar
New Year poster on the door of a family dormitory and I
realized the
population of Chinese students. I also met parents from
Suchow,
China to visit their daughter at my hostel.
There are
programs sponsored by the Manchester Authority to include
diversified culture
in the city, yet I was not impressed either by the Buddhist
Center or
the Chinese Contemporary Center of Art; however, I was very
Impressed by
a craft center called Manchester Craft Design Center, not far
From my
hostel.
