Japanese Go lessons on board/Carlos Pueblo

Japanese Go lessons on board/Carlos Pueblo

One afternoon I was wondering around the observation room on Deck 15
up to the 3rd top level of this mega ship. I found an old gentleman studying
a Japanese Go map and I stopped and watch. Mr. Ted Terpstra was invited
by the cruise to teach Go on board at sea days. He invited me to play with
him and I was shy to admit that I was never be able to play. He gave me a
quick lesson right away and gave me a book, The Way to Go by Karl Baker.
He is the founder and owner of the 50 years San Diego Go Club. I briefly
explained my admiration of Go game and a found memory of a solid wood
Go table at home when I was a kid. It was a gift left behind to my Dad for
his friendship with his Japanese principal in Taipei Technology School. He
could not bring all his belonging back to Japan after 1945. My Dad couldn’t
play Go game either and the table had been served as a small desk for our
homework throughout our school years.

In order to practice the game with him, he yield 10 stones to me for the 1st
Lesson. Go game is occupying spaces and surrounding the opponent’s stones
in order to take prisoners. Once blocking all liberties of the opponent’s stone,
you can take the prisoner by calling Atari, means surrounding or a hit to warn
the opponent. Once both pass their movie, the game is over and ready to count
the occupying territory less the prisoner stones. After coming home, I do check
some of the Go terminology such as Dame, the stone between two groups; Ko
means repeated capture and the liberty is Katsuro. A two eyes formation is a
guaranty of live territory without any thread of Atari.

I did make some progress during my six or so lessons, the Sensei’s yield decreased
from 10 stones to five and then 4. I still can’t figure out some determined placement
on the corner edge to form a double eyes which is several step ahead of my thinking.
He encourages me to play more game like more practice more to make progress. I
mention to him my old college classmate, Chih Ho Su, Ph.D. in Chemistry, is very found
of Go and very introvert person. He went to his room to check on Su’s Dan, ranking in
class of Go, and very much like to play him on the internet.

He mentioned my interest of Go to his fellow passengers from San Diego and later
There were two ladies joined up for lessons. One day at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, a
friend of theirs sailed his yacht to meet them and treated them for lunch. I took a
lot of photos to the black yacht with a helicopter on board. These are American riches.
From my Go lessons, I remember two stories on the classical Chinese literature about
two famous legend, one is about a lesson of the war strategy while the other one is
about a Go game of a premier while foreign invader was defeated and he kept on
playing and later found his wooden shoe heel was broken due to nervous.

The disembark/Carlos Pueblo

The disembark/Carlos Pueblo

After 15 days cruise journey, the ship disembark at the Port of Los Angeles
San Pedro. Usually, it is a headache for me to hop on the public transportation
to make it to the airport and lucky me, Al Huang of my old classmate of the
college time in Taipei agrees to meet me at the port. I felt very humble when I
saw the great size of the ports and he told me that he had been through all
ports, like Long Beach and others for more than an hour. He liked to take me
to visit the museum of Queen Mary, a famous cross Atlantic cruise ship and I
suggested that we just leave the port and go to a Chinese Islam restaurant at
San Gabriel for a long missed chat. I haven’t seen him for 20 years. He is a
scholar with a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the Wayne State in Detroit,
Michigan, a well learned person.

We were across the Los Angeles freeways with a clear view of San Bernadino
Mountains on the east with a snow peak on a top of un-melted snow. The
Freeway, the weather, and the air are all perfect. California is really a land
of abundance. We enter the small city of San Gabriel and see plenty of Kanji
signs on the two main streets. It was still too early; therefore, we walked briefly
on both sides of the intersection. We visited a pretty Buddhist Temple, Boca
Dhama Seal Temple. I am very impressed the golden color architecture and the
surrounding luxury mansions with the same color and I wonder if those are the
dormitory of the monks.

We finished a whole pot of pickled sour Chinese cabbage soup with lamb meat
and a large size baked sesame bread, both are well known and popular in this
restaurant. The original owner is retired and the new owner is still following the
traditional doctrine of Islam in the kitchen. Al and I discussed some of our traveling
experience. He is a biker and with a very thorough and complete experience of long
distance biking in both Los Angeles and the western part of Taiwan. He even passed
through my home town Huwei on the central southwest of the Island.

After the lunch, he took me to visit a park with cherry blossom, Barnes Park of the
City of Monterey Park. Actually, the cherry blossom season is over yet the flowing
festival is yet to come. There are pink tube flowers on the trees surround the park
with third generation oriental youngsters playing softball on the field. I took many
photos on the area and the San Bernadino Mountains far away on the East. My
flight back to Houston was delayed for 4 hours due to the severe weather hindering
the incoming airplane from Chicago, Illinois. He texted me with a message that we
did have a very pleasant chat that day.

Taiwan’s trouble to be annexed by China/Carlos Pueblo

Taiwan’s trouble to be annexed by China/Carlos Pueblo

The most political issue discussed in Taiwan is the annexation of Taiwan
as a part of China by force and we define it as the national status of Taiwan.
When I was young and taught during my life that Taiwan was belonged to
China. I have always doubted it even though I didn’t dare speaking it in
Taiwan. Chinese on both sides of the Formosan Straight insist that there is
only one China and both disagree each other. In Taiwan that China means
the Republic of China while in Peking they call it the People’s Republic of
China; therefore, according to basic logic, there are two Chinas. Recently,
I kind of agree that Taiwan is still a colony of the ROC from every prospect
of view and definition of a nation, even though Taiwanese enjoy high degree
of self-determination, democracy, human right, and most of the Western style
of freedom. It will be changed if one day Taiwan becomes a part of Peking’s
China, then Taiwanese will be like Chinese, Tibetan, Uyghurs, people of Hong
Kong, etc. as slaves of Communist China.

According to the history of Chinese Dynasty, Community China is still a Chinese
ruler that consider their citizen as their slaves or as their cattle that they can do
whatever they like. Human right is not respected and there is no rule of law. In
Chinese history, the conquerors have taken the conquered as their slaves. This
current day Communist regime, they have confiscated all personal property
when they take power in China. They use their slave labors to attract the greedy
foreign investors to exploit them for their gross national product. Taiwan has been
more like the Western nations to respect human right and free market to make
their citizen more comfortable. It will be very difficult to accept such dramatic
change as free people to slavery.

People always are suggesting me to visit the mainland China and I always indicate
that I am very scare of their anti-secession law of 2005 because that I am for Taiwan
independence and I don’t feel safe to travel in China. I don’t think the U.S. Department
of States can rescue me in case I am arrested for such violation. I have better keep on
the cruise travel and land trips toward more civilized world and I shall never joke on
myself.

Leisure living 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Leisure living 2019/Carlos Pueblo

Amy is out on a trip and I am suddenly in charge of everything at home.
Neighbors across the street came to chat with me while I was sweeping the
falling pollen from trees, oaks and sweet gum, out of the pedestrian path
and the street. They are ugly and I must clean it often. Neighbors are planning
to beautify their front gardens in the spring and we just start a beautiful day
weather before a hot summer. There were three pairs of dogs with their owners
passing by to interrupt our chatting.

I am still on my morning walk routine to meet my pets friends. Loosed Forest
jumped toward passing Hendrick and alerted Chuck, the owner while I was
talking with Christine, the owner of Forest. I yelled and ran toward him and
persuaded him back. Chuck complained that Forest shouldn’t be out without
a leash. Chance and his brother Dashel kept a dirty tennis ball on each mouth
when I passed by to greet me. I need to provide them some more clean used
tennis balls when I come back from Los Angeles.

Michelle sent me some photos of her peach fruits on the tree. We are not quite
sure if they are ready to be pick up before I go out again in late April. I can only
go to Austin to do her yard a weekend before I take off.

I have sent my text to the Spanish teacher for my excuse for not attending the
class and get her text back. I need to check one or two words to be sure. I’ll tell
Japanese Sensei this morning after class at our coffee break. These two language
classes have occupied some of my leisure living. I am going to take my Spanish
final while passing through those Spanish speaking ports on my way to LA.

Tuesday night, we had had a very good tennis up to two full sets and four games
because Captain Steiner was feeling good physically. He is approaching 80 and
the rest of us are in our 70’s. Good exercises can help me sleep well at night, of
course, I take napes during the day often.

I’ll be back to cruise menu again the day after tomorrow. Al, my college time
Classmate, will meet me at the port of San Pedro, Los Angeles for our mini
class reunion. I also invite Ron, another classmate, and all their family members
for a nice lunch before I set for LAX at that evening.
