Visiting Chateau Fontainebleau, France/Carlos Pueblo

Visiting Chateau Fontainebleau, France/Carlos Pueblo

One night, a Taiwanese female tourist recommended Chateau Fontainebleau
for me to visit and explained the palace has been famous for its gardens and
was a palace for the emperors mistresses. I took a subway train to Lyon Station
and transferred to a railway to Fontainebleau-Avon Station about 34 miles
southeast of Paris. The palace was established in 1137 as a fortress of the king
and later became a hunting place and palace for mistresses. It was also an
administrative palace for some kings and emperors during times.

Again, I took a direct bus from the train station to the front gate of the palace.
On the map, it is stated as Fontainebleau-Avon and I assume there are two small
cities adjacent to each other. It’s been a capital; therefore, the cities appear very
nice like Versailles. I entered a side gate through a park later know is Diane Garden.
Diane was then a mistress of King Henry IV. The flowers bushes closed to the palace
building attracted me very much; however, I could not name them except later in
another garden a gardener told me one of them deutzia, a kind of snow like flower
in Chinese description in the dictionary. There is a statue of Diane in a small pond
with spring fountain and her 4 handsome dogs accompanying her. I walked along the
edge of the garden and noticed that I was late for roses or peonies. Outside of the
building wall, there is a bronze plate shown the garden’s name and brief introduction.

This bronze plate is facing the big palace square with the famous horse shoe stairs to
the main palace facing the main gate and outside is the city’s Place of General De Gaulle.
There were visitors started to come in include two groups of school children line up to
visit one side of the palace. The main portion was not open until later. I continued to
walk into a larger Jardin Anglais, English Garden. There are small brooks, grass ground,
lakes, bridge, and many beautiful flowering bushes. I asked a gardeners group of three,
one of them wrote two names of flowers for me, Rhododindon and Deutzia, I believed
in English, Rhododendron and Deutzia for both. I recognized Rhododendron immediately
because of running into the season on my trip to Seattle and Alaska. I believe that azalea
is a sub-species of rhododendron which seems combined several azalea flowers together
into a bunch. There are several kinds of colors, red, pink, and yellow rhododendron in
the garden. There is a pavilion on the lake with white swans and row boats for the interested
visitors. On the other side, there is a huge Palace Park and la grande prairie, a grand praire.

I noticed when I studied the search which interested me very much. Louis XIV utilized this
Palace as well as Chateau Versailles, his grandfather, Louis XIII was born here. Both
Napoleons loved here, the first signed his abdication here while the third received Siam
Group with presents here. He also joined the British forces invaded Peking and robbed the
Summer Palace. He kept both Siam and Chinese staff inside the Palace Chinese Museum.
He, the third, lost the French-Prussian War and was a prisoner of war at the end.

Buses tour parts of Paris/Carlos Pueblo

Buses tour parts of Paris/Carlos Pueblo

I ran into a rainy day on my second attempt to visit the Chateau Versailles.
After struggling so much on the unfamiliar streets, I managed to reach a
bus stop in between Porte du Garigliano and Balard stations next to the
famous European Hospital of George Pompidou’ famous for the artificial
heart installation. I was not aware of all of the significance then until now
with the help of Paris map and Google search. The bus stop was on a street
side of a small park and the kind driver was on his break. He invited me to
take his bus for the next ride to a regional transit center to catch on another
bus to the Chateau. This young driver speak fluent English, lucky me. It is
Route 169 going through several places where I was at the station of Porte
de Versailles on my first attempt to the Chateau. He took me pass a pretty
township of Clamart with a famous Percy Army Hospital and showed me
several luxury residential areas. I believe those are the residence of the
physicians who cannot live far away as in the case of medical center in Houston.
French residents decorate their front yards with varies kinds of flowers which
make the area very elegant indeed.

This kind young driver took me inside the drivers’ break office for a cup of coffee.
It was still raining hard and I decided to take his bus back to the starting point of
stop. He recommended me take Route 72 for a tour of Seine River, later I read
the map which covers most of the famous scenery points of Paris, like Chaillot
Palace, Effel Tower, Army Museum, Ecole Academy, Grand and Petit Palace etc.,
final stop is the Concorde Square then you can walk to the Champs-Elysees Avenue
and moving on.

In order to avoid the raining, I took another bus, Route 24, to keep on circling Paris.
The route passes through Republic, Nation, Bastille, and Bercy, yet I had had enough
buses for one day and stopped at the Metro Lyon Station and took the subway back.
Next time when I visit Paris, I know how to plan my trip in the city more effectively

by taking buses.

Three visits to Chateau Versailles/Carlos Pueblo

Three visits to Chateau Versailles/Carlos Pueblo

I had received three recommendations in the hostel from three well learned
Taiwanese young ladies, the Reims Cathedral, the Chateau Versailles, and
The Chateau Fontainebleau. One day recently my new moving neighbor across
the street dropping by and introducing herself as a French from Champagne
area. I proudly announced that I just came back from Reims and she was very
surprised and further explained that she was actually from a small city called
Troyes, famous of crocodile polo shirt and some underwear manufacturing. I
Was like her old acquaintance in another town. Second one tip was the Chateau
Versailles where I had had three visits and the third tip was Fontainebleau which
I would have another description later.

I took a light rail at a nearby Porte d’Italie westward to Porte de Versailles which
was a mistake and after wondering on streets for a while. I boarded another train
C5 between Issy-Val de Seine and Issy to Versailles-Chateau final station. I met a
young Chinese couple and the man becoming my guide off the train. City of
Versailles is an attractive town with a city hall looks like a palace. I dropped by
a visitors center and walked toward the gold laced luxury architecture. Chateau
Versailles is huge, luxury, and respectably standing there. First two stables, small
and great stables, then a statue of Louis XIV and his horse, then the honor gate
entering to the palace. Two ministers’ wing on both sides of a square then the
main palace. I entered by left side pathway to the orange garden and was totally
speechless.

There are steps descending to the orange garden, actually it is not quite warm
enough in Paris for orange growing. All trees and bushes are trimmed well like
the movies of Versailles shown. The experience of my visit to this palace and garden
is really so fantastic which drives me back again two more times. There are two more
palaces on the back of the main chateau, Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon with additional
Marie Antoinette’s Estate and the Queens’s Hamlet. Grand Trianon was for Louis XIV’s
mistresses while Petit Trianon was Marie Antoinette’s project, the wife of Louis XVI.
From the front look of both back garden palaces, there are not as significant as the
Main Chateau; however, if we take a look from a locked gate on Grand Canal, it is
Really a huge project with lakes, creeks, and garden farm, etc.

There are many historical activities occured in the Chateau Versailles. France was a
dominant European empire especially the Bourbon and Napoleon dynasty combined.
Look at the Army Museum, it took 6 or 7 international allied force to defeat both
Napoleon and of course, France was getting weaker and weaker after so many wars.
I am so glad that the wars damage are manageable so far and so much to see for the

later generation.
