Walking on Promenade Plantee, Paris/Carlos Pueblo

Walking on Promenade Plantee, Paris/Carlos Pueblo

I had attempted several times to search the remain of the Bastille Fortress with
no success yet when I concentrated to a small park near by the Opera House, I
walked into the Promenade Plantee, Coulee verte Rene-Dumont, that I wished to
work harder in my French lesson during my early life. I found the name of the park
later from a picture which I took on my walk, Gymnase Reuilly, and searched out
of this obsolete Vincennes Railway converted to a paved public walk park 4.7 km
from Bastille to Bois de Vincennes, an old palace now the largest city park of Paris.
The park idea began in 1988 and opened in 1993, the Google search mentioned
the High Line Park of Chelsea, New York City was 1 mile long also converted from an
abandoned railway from Chicago to NYC. Thanks to Patrick Hwang took me to visit
High Line Park and I believed Professor Ko, mayor of Taipei, went to visit High Liine on
His first visit of NYC in 2014 as well. Promenade was built 10 m above the ground on
The Viaduc des Arts, a kind of luxury art works display shops looked like a stadium
shape architecture which I found the real name at the same search. I was mistaken a
memorial plate on the wall for North African something to North American liberation
in the event of 1944, very stupid of me and I felt sorry for myself.

I like flowers and I love gardens. The city authorized to architects, Philippe Mathieux
And Jacques Vergely, to design this lovely elevated green park with a lot of small garden
lots along the walkway. The park is well facilitated, I mean toilets and water, and well
maintained. I saw roses and cherry blossom, of course not as significant od D.C., London,
and Dublin, etc. yet it made me feel that I did have a special spring, a prolonging spring.
I walked out of the trail two or three times to see some parts of Paris in more details, i.e.,
I bought a piece of water melon on a fruits shop and consumed it on a bench and continue
my journey. Once I found my camera battery was low in charge, I exited to a building, the
Gymnase Reuilly, for a break. The staff was very nice to allow me recharge my battery and
I was watching a high school physical education class, a hand ball game lesson, for the entire
hour. I did walk to the garden of Reuilly yet not a complete visit before a dead end of the park.

It was a surprise visit of Paris. Vincennes is on the suburban area with a beautiful landscape,
of course it was a royal palace of France once in the old time had been converted to a city
park. There were flowers and lake with white swans. My problem occurred again for toilet
facility and I was urgently need to find such facility. There is a zoo adjacent to the park.

Searching for the remain of Bastille Fortress/Carlos Pueblo

Searching for the remain of Bastille Fortress/Carlos Pueblo

I saw the traffic sign to Bastille when I got off Chatelet Station on my walk to
Louvre Palace. I reminded myself to come back to visit the site of Bastille Prison
during the great French Revolution. I love history especially its story beyond the
textbook and now I even have had the opportunity to visit the place. The next
morning after the visit of the Avenue Champs-Elysees, I took the subway to Bastille
Station for a visit. I had been informed several times that the Fortress site had been
torn down and built a huge opera house yet I still liked to find the site of small remain
of the Fortress. I didn’t think that the French authority would ignore such historical
significance and I was almost wrong. I found a small Chinese vegetarian restaurant for
lunch and the employees of that restaurant had no idea of what I talked about. During
my school time early in my life, I had to recite this piece of history and answered correctly
in order to pass the schools entrance examinations.

Those of us who love history always like to visit the historical sites such as battlefield and
memorial etc. One day I did pass by Bastille again and I wondered in front of the opera house
for some time and still had no clue of the remain of prison site and I almost gave up searching
idea until one day. I ran into three fellow Taiwanese tourists at the stair of Stalingrad Station
on my way back to the city from Montmartre. One of the lady told me that indeed there was
indeed a small remain site inside a small park near the original site of the Fortress. I went back
to Bastille to locate such small park. A gentleman in a gated office behind the opera house escorting me out of the gate and pointed the opera house and said that was the prison site. I
was still not giving it up. I walked down to the street away from the opera house and tried to
locate such small remain site and I found the famous Promenade Plantee.

There are many restaurants across the Bastille square from the opera house. On my 4th visit of
Bastille, I asked several restaurant waiters about the remains of the old fortress. They pointed
a kiosco magazine owner who was the Bastille native. He told me to ask the subway employee
inside the station. I got the correct answer from a second person referred by the first one. The
memorial site is on the wall of line 5 toward Bobigny-Pablo Picasso Station. I did find the site on
a piece of wall with some stones and illustrations. The Fortress was built to protect Paris from the British invasion and later was converted to a prison for the dissidents. When the riot broke
out, there were only seven prisoners in it. The rioters, or the revolutionary, were mainly for the
the weapons and ammunition. It was on 14th day of July, 1789.

It is the Bastille Day, 07/14, international day of celebration for the start of human right movement. France since then has been tampered so many years with numerous wars until
the end of World War II. I checked on Google France after Napoleon, French people have
been suffered a lot.

Walking down to Avenue des Champs Elysees/Carlos Pueblo

Walking down to Avenue des Champs Elysees/Carlos Pueblo

I have had a warm feeling when I review the photos of Paris. I took No 7
subway line to Chatelet station on the west bank of the Seine, Musee du
Louvre was right in front of the station. I was so excited that finally I had
reached such a famous palace in the world. Suddenly, the famous movie,
Les Trois Mousquetaires by Alexandre Dumas, came back into my mind.
The Musketeers inspection ground by Louis XIII is still there and the Palace
Has been converted to a museum ever since a King moved to the Versailles
Chateau. The crystal pyramid is one addition and most of all still maintains
in excellent condition. A large garden is adjacent to the palace with pretty
flowers in my favorite and the immediate neighbor is the Concord Square.
The Avenue  des Champs Elysees is on between two Arcs, Arc de Triomphe
Carousel and Arc de Triomphe del’Etoile current day renamed to de Gaulle
Etolle.

I walked entire 1.18 miles, 70 meters width Avenue on both sides. First, I was
enjoy the luxury garden dwelling on the west side north bound, I wonder who
are those residents, later generation of previous royalty , government executives
, or rich business family. They are very gracefully built, managed, and blossom
In the spring of Paris. I could only name two kinds of flowers, roses and turnips,
and the rest colorful were beautiful yet unknown or could not be named by me.
It is very considerate of Paris to provide benches in front of the dwelling gardens
for visitors to sit.

In order to keep my good memory, I walked around the Arc and took pictures of
every corner. There were many visitors from all over the world especially those
nations with some kinds relationship with France. I walked back toward the Louvre
on the east side toward south. There are more commercial building on this side and
I could see the Eiffel Tower clearly which would be my next visit target place.

Both Arc architectures were Napoleon’s idea. Under his tenure of French empire,
France expended and he liked to make his future generation aware of it. I think that
I have learned some more French history by this visit of Paris and a better picture of
the European past and now. France and the Europe have been in peace for more than
70 years.

Visiting Reims, France/ Carlos Pueblo

Visiting Reims, France/ Carlos Pueblo

Paris Megabus station is inside of a park of the north bank of Bercy of the River of
Seine. I took the early bus to Reims east and north east of Paris. It is said Reims-
Champampagne which was attracted to me for the drink. Yesterday, I checked the
city on Google and found that Reims is inside the region of Alsace-Champagne-
Ardene-Lorrine. Alsace-Lorraine is famous for la demiere classe, the last class, by
Alphonse Daudet that I was taught in my junior high school in Taiwan. The story
was about the last French class of an elementary school after the 1870 Franco-
Prussia War, of course I was not aware of the relationship when I visited the
city neither of the war, Bismarck, Napoleon III, French Revolution, and of course
the German surrender of WW II at Reims, France.

The bus driver let us off at the high speed rail station, Garf de Champagne Ardene
TGF, it is about 3 miles from the city center. My strategy was taking the light rail to
enter the city to the final stop and walked back to the city center which worked well
for me. The train works as a street car and be on and off at each stop of your desire.
I remembered the key points on the route of this classical city of more than 2,000
years.  Residential and commercial areas are on each side of the street with the rail
tract. I was very impressed for its cleans and beauty. Most of the small shops were
run by immigrants who spoke English well and I had no problem to deal with them.
There was a kind of cherry blossom which we called it wild cherry in Texas and red
bud in Washington, D.C. area. Wild cherry is not a kind of cherry and that is why I
actually do not like it. I call it Confucius hate because he hates the violet color steal
the glory of the red color while the song of Cheng violate the harmony of music.
The wild cherry flower has a slightly pink violet as I think of.

I passed by and identified later the big church of Façade de Bacilica of St. Remi, one
Of the famous churches of Reims, yet not many visitor on that day of my visit. I was
Wondering if I should take the tram again and attempted to find a toilet continue on
my way. I saw dahlia flowers in a flowers shop. I came to the rail road station of Reims,
a major hub of French railroad system. I stopped by a restaurant on the city center
square for my lunch and it was near by a golden statue of victories. Restaurants were
full and the city was very busy. I circles the huge cathedral, Notre-Dame de Reims, took
pictures on every corner for my future enjoyment and entered the church. Joan de Arc
is inside the church and outside on the ground, she is on the horse with fighting uniform.
The cathedral had been very important for the old French Kingdom for the coronation,
the prerogative of the consecration, were held here by archbishops and military strong

man and woman.
